homosexual acts are sinful. is the attraction itself considered a sin? I ask this because in some threads, people say it’s not, that being ‘gay’ per se is not a sin. What does the Church teach then?

No, attraction is not the sin, it is acting upon that attraction that is the sin.

The attraction is not a sin unless it is acted upon but it is a disordered attraction and should be viewed as such. Dwelling on the attraction , promoting it needs to be avoided or it becomes sin for instance. Action on the the thoughts of attractions of course are sinful.

The natural order of sexual attraction designed by God is heterosexual.

Per the Catechism of the Catholic Church, homosexual actions are intrinsically disordered. The homosexual ‘attraction’ however is not specifically sinful but can ‘cross’ into sin (just as heterosexual ‘attraction’ can cross into sin) depending on whether that ‘attraction’ is dwelt upon and ‘furthered’ improperly. Being ‘attracted’ to a man (or a woman) no matter one’s sexuality by ‘noticing’ is one thing. . .to start to get specific urges, to begin to picture oneself becoming ‘involved’ is where the ‘attraction’ crosses over and can segue into **impure thoughts **which ARE sinful.

A homosexual person (or a chaste unmarried heterosexual person) can thus be ‘attracted’ to another person without incurring sin if the ‘attraction’ is kept from becoming impure. This is difficult but possible if one asks for God’s assistance.

Our desires for what is not pleasing to GOD is not sinful unless we act on those desires. We need to understand covenental relationship with Jesus and the one flesh union. Those of us who are heterosexual need to realize we are capable as well of having sexual realations which are equally opposing to GOD’s plan. People may not be aware what they are doing is wrong and therefore we need to show mercy. Not to say approving the acts. 😉
