Genetic. Also, saying this in advance for the next “opinion” poll: Earth goes round Sun.

Genetic predilection for a particular kind of sin.

Other – there seems to be evidence for a genetic predisposition to homosexuality. That predisposition does not seem to be totally predictive and there is also strong evidence that early environment, possibly even pre-birth, affects the direct that the predispostion takes a person. Conversely, environment may result in homosexual inclinations even in individuals not born with the genetic predisposition.

While that seems complex, it is similar to what happens with alcoholism and diabetes.

And acting out on that predisposition is what makes it sinful.

There is absolutely ZERO evidence to support homosexuality being genetic. There is no gay gene.
Homosexuality is the result of one or more of upbringing/environment/choice.
Active homosexuality is not only a sin but it is a grave sin.

There’s not option for what I believe.

Homosexuality is not genetic. I say this as a psychologist, not as a Catholic. It is not however a choice either. There may be some genetic predisposition but there are also other factors and the genetic predisposition is not necessary. Homosexuality is a cross to bear. We do not choose our crosses but we must bear them with strength, hope and faith.

PerfectTiming,

Where do you think homosexuality comes from then, if it is 100% not genetic and not chosen? Also, is it a little too exclusive to say that the sexuality is not genetic, when it may be that certain sequences of DNA code influence it, and a cocktail of biological factors turn on/off the effects of these sequences? I thought that most things in biology that are strongly genetically influenced are not happily down to pre-packaged ‘genes’, but down to sequences which have to be identified as genes, even when their functions are complexly interrelated.

You’re ignoring the environmental influences. Environmental factors can influence the on’off effects of genes and can interact with genetic influences.

What in your mind are the environmental triggers, if you agree that is what they are, and do you know how they interact with our ‘genes’?

And as to the genetic influence, same question - where does this genetic influence come from?

Also, as a psychologist and Catholic, what other conditions can you think of which predispose people to sin, but which are significantly environmentally caused?

Thanks

Is the knowledge of human biology advanced enough to exactly determine the causes of homosexuality? I highly doubt that.

Has the gene which is responsible for predisposing one to homosexuality been indentified?
or the environmental causes? I highly doubt that too.

We can only speculate homosexuality has a genetic cause. Besides all genetic disorders are passesd on by genes to new offspring. How can homosexuality be passed on by genes when most homosexuals do not have any natural offspring, as they are in same sex relationships. It’s like if all people with blue eyes did not have any children, all blue eyed people would soon cease to exist.

I do believe that homosexuality has a combination of biological, environment and mental health causes, all of which have yet to be indentified. Also in some people it’s a lifestyle choice.

Out of the available options, I’d say that it is genetic but that homosexual acts are sinful. I do not believe that people choose to be homosexual but they do choose to engage in homosexual acts. Homosexual acts are gravely sinful.

I really don’t see the point in an opinion poll like this, other than to create conditions ripe for arguing.

The Church herself is not so much concerned with the causes of homosexuality as it is with the good news that we can overcome sin through Jesus Christ. Shouldn’t we be focused on that as well, rather than on arguments which serve no purpose and really are nothing more than occasions for sin against the virtue of charity anyway?

Good point.

I was about to answer regarding the genetic pre-dispositions, but you are right. The church focuses on the behavior, more than the fact that someone intrinsically has same sex attractions. So I’ll stop here. 😃

In case you didn’t notice, CAF has many homosexual advocates who start these threads on a regular basis. All the time, in fact. It is a tactic to keep us all stirred up about the issue, I believe, and distract us from being so darn Catholic.

Well, if I wanted everyone to agree with each other, I would have only created one option in the poll 😃 And there’s supposed to be a point in the polls? I just do it for the heck of it. 🤷 To see how many Catholics believe so and so on.

So answer me this.

Are we now going to conclude that there is a gene for sodomy, for incest, for pedophilia, for bestiality, for homicide, for theft, for adultery, for promiscuity, for every other perversion of our nature?

Doesn’t this sound a little suspiciously like “The devil made me do it?”

Why don’t you just search for the thousands of already-existing threads on this subject? What we as individuals believe is less important than following what God tells us, which is that regardless of how it originates, homosexual acts are sinful. Period.

homosexuality is a choice. whoever came up with the genetics argument is probably a sympathizer or are themselves gay.

Wow, really guys??? The majority of the Catholics on this forum voted that homosexuality is a “sin and a choice??”

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is NOT a sin and is NOT a choice.

Homosexual BEHAVIOR is the sin.
