This is actually more difficult than it may seem at first glance. What’s natural law? All the definitions I’ve seen are entirely subjective and depend on the person’s interpretation of things, apart from buffalo’s definition which states that God gave everyone morals or something.
So, can someone tell me, once and for all, what natural law is?![]()
In Catholic theology “Natural Law” refers to “the participation of human reason in the divine eternal law.” Cf St Thomas Aquinas. It is fairly close to the Platonic conception which is that of an ideal objective moral order which can at least in theory be known by reason.
In English usage the term usually refers to the “Laws of Nature” by which is denoted the concept that each being acts in accordance with its nature. Obviously, this definition doesn’t work so well when dealing with human beings who possess choice, and thus complex natures.
Unfortunately, in debate people tend to confuse these two definitions frequently.
