Anyone heard the claim by homosexuals, that King David and Jonathan were homosexual lovers?

This is the first I heard of it, and how do you counter it?

You ignore it. It’s silly tripe designed to get your goat.

Simply pray for the person who brings it up.

I’m not sure where they get this notion.
I think they are “reading into the biblical text”
that which is simply not THERE.

I first heard this claim in college in 1978.
The same people also claimed that Ruth and
Naomi were lesbian lovers. That too is simply
reading into the bible text what is not there.

Jonathan loved David like a brother and gave him some gifts.
When the two hadn’t seen each other in a long time,
they fell on each other’s necks and kissed each other.
What in the world makes that a “gay” gesture???
People who see that in the biblical text are Westerners
who don’t realize that middle eastern folk kiss each other on the cheek and hug all the time. They are not “feeling each other up.”
We Western peoples see two men greet each other like that and we assume they are homosexuals.
And the reason is that Western men usually don’t
greet each other with hugs & kisses.

Also, David, lamenting Jonathan’s death, said that his love
was better to him than the love of women. That too does not imply a homosexual relationship between the two either.
The agape love of two close friends is dramatically different and often even more “spiritual” than the romantic love between a man and a woman. David was physically turned on by women, as his unfortunate adultery with Bath-Sheba is proof enough.

Hi Manny,

The claim is made on the basis of the following verses:
1 Samuel 18:1 When he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 18:2 And Saul took him that day, and would not let him return to his father’s house. 18:3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.

There is nothing that indicates this love is homosexual. As a matter of fact is says he “loved him as his own soul”. That automatically implies that Jonathan cared about the fate of his own soul and that of David’s. Both were well aware of God’s word concerning homosexual activity. (eg. Lev 18:22 and 20:13) Neither would have done anything to endanger the soul of the other.

All one has to do is read about David to know he was heterosexual, not homosexual. (eg 2 Sam 11:2 and following).

One has only to go back about a century to find letters between men like Abraham Lincoln and other literate men of that period that would read like modern 20 th century love letters between a man and a woman, It had nothing to do with homosexual relationships and all to do with periods in history where men and women had close friendships with the same sex. Men on the road often shared the same bed at an inn or boarding house. Those in today’s society who are homosexually oriented would find it very easy to read back their own proclivity into such letters and actions; a reading which would be totally in error. They do the same with biblical characters. It is wishful thinking by a modern group seeking to justify their behavior.

One might well respond, that if men in the past had such close and intimate friendships without a deviant sexual relationship, why don’t we see this in today’s world. In my opinion it is quite obvious and is the fact that stright guys in today’s society lean over backwards to avoid anything that the modern mind might interpret as deviancy.

It may be a particular part of the North American mentality, as in Europe and the Middle East it is not unusual for men to walk holding hands or exchange an embrace and even a kiss on meeting. Of course not a kiss on the lips, but a friendly kiss on the cheek. Comments in the news recently questioned such an exchange between the Iranian head man and his Iraqi counterpart as being a slap at the U.S. Maybe it was only good manners.

This reminds me of the greatest danger of the promotion of homosexual culture in today’s society: perverting healthy, Godly fraternal love between people of the same gender.

People who see erotic, sexual love into the story of David and Jonathan, or between 2 brothers/sisters in today’s world poison the richness of human relationships. They tear families apart, and drive the wedge of suspicion in human relationships.

We must pray for an end to this dreadful promotion of ‘gay’ culture.

the answer lies in the perversion of the meaning of love, friendship and affection within our own culture, not in the biblical texts or in letters exchanged by friends in other eras. Watch some reruns Friends, CiSEXity or recent “comedy” program and quickly see that friendship and love no longer exist to purveyors of this culture, there is no way except sexual acts to express any feelings whatever. We have perverted sex, which in turn has perverted the meaning of love in all its expressions from friendship to fraternal and parental love, and of course, married love. Since we cannot divorce expressions of affection from sexual foreplay due to the perversions of our own culture, we ascribe a similar warped view of affection to other cultures in other times and places.

Ya Annie and not just love. My wife and I have six grown up kids and their spouses. They watched a lot of those sit-coms, probably still do. Giving each other zingers around the dinner table got so bad we called them on it. Zingers = smart cracks at someone else’s expense and usually the majority ganging up on one whose turn it was to “take it.” Now family gathering at Ma and Dads is not much fun and we can observe that relating in any other way seems difficult, particularly for the younger ones. Personally I cannot stand these shows. The canned laughter is a particular annoyance.
