I don’t think the bible is meant to be understood in isolation. It’s to be read in community, with the knowledge and insight of other people around us. Just like church is to be done in community. The fact that we can’t do church by ourselves does not mean that we can’t do church. But it does recognise that it is a communal activity, not a solitary one. The bible is not a document for an individual. It is a document for the church and should be read as a church. That’s not to say we can’t read it as individuals. But we should pay attention to and learn from the church community, when reading it.
