Honesty in the confessional

Sometimes the accumulation of my venial sins just begins to eat at me, and I feel the need to go to Confession. But when I get into the Confessional I start to cry, then I get embarrassed, then I forget half of what I wanted to confess, then I end up a nervous wreck in the confessional! Thankfully, the priests are usually understanding, and God is forgiving. I truly am sorry for my sins, and do not wish to repeat them, and if I have committed a mortal sin I do manage to confess that, but Confession is a rather traumatic experience for me. I’m sixty years old, I think I should have gotten over this by now, but I haven’t.

But I DO feel better afterwards

I’ve heard a priest tell me “Let’s thank God for a good and honest confession” right before absolution. I took it’s meaning to actually thanking God for his grace in letting me get the words out. I usually get very scared (I can actually see my stomach pound where my aorta is pumping blood so hard) before going to Confession, and I tend to stutter and get tounge-tied a little when I’m really, really nervious (and I think going to Confession counts as making me nervious), so I know it’s only with God’s help that I am able to make a good one.

I guess that statement could also be used to incite a little guilt if one didn’t make as complete of a confession as they could. Plant a little seed to try to make a better confession next time.

I shed tears no matter what my confession is about, and no matter how hard I try not to, and no matter how composed I feel prior to going in. There is just something about admitting my sin that makes me cry. My priest is very accepting of it. Thank God for understanding priests.
