Some time ago I paid a bill to my veterinarian with my check card for a few hundred dollars. About a month or so later when I received my bank statement I noticed that the payment did not clear. Thinking that it was just held up in the system I continued to keep track of it. After several months I realized that the payment was not going to be processed. I discussed this with several friends and family members, asking if anyone thought I had an obligation to bring this matter to the attention of the vet’s office. Everyone I spoke to said that since I paid the bill in good faith that I had no duty to report what happened. Most everone thought that it was the responsibility of the vet’s office to keep track of their receipts. Does anyone here feel differently?

Well since that bill has to be paid some way, and if you don’t pay than it will have to be taken out of another place. I would say that since you have already set aside that money for the payment that you should not take it back. You in a sense agreed to pay and even if the vet office messed up it does not take away the fact that you haven’t payed.

It is like when you go to a drive through and you give the cashier your ten dollar bill but it accidentally falls down between the window and your car. Do you take your food and run or do you open your door and pick up the money and hand it to her.

I say you need to pay the bill. I would hate to have to see that money come out of someone else pocket.

I would go to the vet and talk it over with them. Maybe there was some confusion there and it got lost in the fold. When you do good things like that, good things happen to you.

no offense BUT THIS IS A STUPID QUESTION—OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO PAY–YOU OWE THE MAN FOR HIS SERVICES AND JUST BECAUSE HE MADE A MISTAKE DOESNT CHANGE THE FACT THAT YOU KNOW YOU OWE HIM–GO PAY IT!!!

No offense, but this is not a very charitable post. I see that you are new, you may want to take a look at the rules for posting in this forum.

How rude!

And now you owe the OP an apology!!! But that’s cool cause we are in the “apologetics” forums. (sorry I just got back from reading the pun thread).

Anyways, to the OP, I agree with your friends that if the vet doesn’t recognize that it didn’t clear then it should be their responsibility to call you about it, HOWEVER, it would be a pretty excellent Christian witness if you went and talked to them. Just MHO.

God bless

yes. i do. you should immediately contact the vets office and make arrangements to pay the bill. next time you want to take your animal to that clinic they will ask you to pay the bill up front.
you should be honest and call them asap and make arrangements to pay the bill as soon as possible.

that is the honest thing to do.👍

I think you fulfilled your end of the bargain when you gave the vet the check so I don’t think you’re obligated to notify him.

But since you’ve recognized it the error I think it would be a truly charitable thing to tell him that it hasn’t been cashed. Who knows, he may appreciate your honesty and write it off.

So in my opinion, if you don’t tell him you do nothing wrong but you may pass up an opportunity to do good.

People Please-----if Your At The Supermakret And You Pay With A 20—and Your Bill Is 15 Dollars And You Are Owed 5 Dollars Change–and The Attendant Gives You A 10----and You Know He Made The Mistake----you Have To Say Something–if Not Your Lying By Omission-----c’mon-----get A Grip–pay Your Bill!!!

I’ve always noticed that when you do things like this (let them know and pay it) that it’s a really good feeling. It’s something you didn’t HAVE to do, but very clearly could do. Usually it’s totally worth it!

Rookie12: I beg to differ with at least part of your response in that no question asked with a sincere heart is a stupid question. Actually, it was my opinion from the start that I should call the vet’s office. The reason I posted this question was in attempt to convince my wife, who happens to be the family member who most objects to me doing so, that we should make the call. I will certainly not show my wife this response because I know it will not get the desired result. I appreciate the responses from all and most agree with those who stated that it is probably not a moral requirement, but is definitely the right thing to do.

I’ll be more charitable than Rookie12. You might want to explain to your wife that not making this right with the vet is the same as stealing. He provided a service to you. Even though you gave him a check card, it’s obvious that the charge didn’t go through. Therefore you haven’t paid your bill.

you could also tell your wife that if she likes that clinic, she should be willing to do her part to keep it in business.

I disagree with you Kim. He gave the vet a check (just a technicality but I believe the OP said a check not a check card), the vet accepted it. Transaction done. What they do with it afterwards is their business. If he had paid with cash and then the vet somehow lost one of his $100 bills on the way to the bank, would you still be telling the OP to pay the vet again?

I don’t think you should tell someone to accuse their spouse of stealing when we don’t know what happened. Maybe there’s a legitimate reason why the vet hasn’t cashed it. Maybe the vet knows all about it and has a note in the file to mention it at the next checkup.

Actually, it was a check card. I gave the card to the receptionist who printed a receipt which I signed and gave back to her. I believe that this is the equivalent of an actual check.

my main reason for paying it would be that if you don’t, the charge will turn up someday when you don’t expect it. Maybe , if you live one jump away from zero bank balance like many people, when there’s no money in the bank, in which case there’ll be an extra charge.
Some of my checks take forever to clear. I would just give them a call and tell them the situation.

Something very similar happened to us a few years ago. A check that I wrote was never cashed. Over a year went by. Finally, I called the bank to cancel the check and then went straight to the bank to get the amount I owed in cash. With cash in hand, I made a trip to pay my bill in person. The response was massive and I believe that the money, though happily received, was used not as a payment for my own bill, but for another act of charity. God works in wonderful ways.

Of all the responses posted here I believe that this is the one that has the best chance of convincing my wife. I believe no further comments are necessary. Just pray for her. Thank you.

Hey, that’s not very nice. I think it’s a good question.

Anyway, what I would suggest is that, yes, unfortunately, you may want to go talk to your vet about the bill now - while you have the money. I pay the bills for our family, so I know what can occur, such as the bill suddenly showing up a month later when you have no money and three other checks/transactions bounce as a result of the vet bill clearing your account. This, my friend, you do NOT want. So I would go see what’s up.

God bless you,

Tracy
