Hi everyone, I was just looking for some good, affordable honeymoon ideas. By affordable I mean somewhere around 500 (we are super broke) and somewhere within driving distance of Indiana? Thanks!

I’m not sure about the costs, but how about a weekend in Chicago? (Not a good winter destination, I suppose!)

Indiana’s got lots of fun state parks. Potato Creek, Turkey Run, Brown County, etc. As far as I know, all of the above have cabins for rent. You would just have to make sure you know what is and is not included at the site regarding things like meals, air conditioning, bedding, etc.
Or if you like amusement parks, you could go to Cedar Point (in Ohio) or Six Flags (near Chicago). Depending on where in Indiana you are at, those wouldn’t be too far of a drive.

Yeah, there’s plenty to do in Chicago. The Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, the Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium, Navy Pier, Sears Tower (or whatever they are calling it these days). And lots and lots of pizza.

depending on your definition of “driving distance” besides Chicago, you could also drive to Philadelphia, New York and/or Washington, DC.
All three have historic and cultural sites (including Catholic ones).
Also, you might be able to find a deal on airfare and hotel room in Miami, Ft Lauderdale, Clearwater, Naples, etc in Florida. Sometimes there are cruse deals to Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean too.

Ugh, there is not really a great destination 500 dollars from Indiana. I guess my vote is Chicago too. Reluctantly. But don’t let the destination mean too much to you. Enjoy your honeymoon! How much is a fathead of a tropical beach?

A friend of mine went on a “service” honeymoon. They stayed in a bed-n-breakfast while they did a Habitat for Humanity project. Total cost for a week: about $200. Lifetime of wonderful memories.
My next door neighbor had a Pittsburgh Sports Teams honeymoon. They were married in late Sept several years ago and the Pens, the Steelers, and the Pirates were all playing in Pittsburgh that week. They just went home to their apartment but attended three sporting events, plus ate dinner out.
A friend of mine went on a “service” honeymoon. They stayed in a bed-n-breakfast while they did a Habitat for Humanity project. Total cost for a week: about $200. Lifetime of wonderful memories.

Oh man! I just thought of one! Nashville! It is a great town with good dining, affordable hotels and there is always something going on.

I would really consider this. In 20 years you will look back and have stayed at an iconic hotel in America and not have had to spend a ton of money.
Don’t book online, do it on the phone with a manager. They might be able to create a good deal for you. Mention your situation and that it is your honeymoon and that you are poor…

We, too, were super broke (so we thought!) when we got married in February 2013! We ended up honey-mooning in Indianapolis… (we live in Cincinnati). That being said, there is a chain of hotels we found out about recently that have a private swimming pool INSUITE in Indianapolis (and a few surrounding…I can’t remember the name, maybe google? It was expensive, but you may be able to do that for one night and a different hotel for a night or two?
Otherwise, I absolutely LOVE Hocking Hills, near Athens, Ohio. It’s about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Cincinnati, and it has gorgeous, affordable cabins (and even cheaper Bed and Breakfasts), great scenery, and most cabins are secluded and have private hot tubs. There is a lot of cool things to see and hike… Not sure how far it would be from you!
(Just remember…no matter how broke you feel now, you’ll feel a million times more broke if a baby follows! I look back on our original “broke” days fondly–we now have a ten month old! (Yes, she followed ten months after our wedding). We love her to the moon and back, but it brings a whole new level of broke, lol!)

Depending on where you live, Northern Michigan could certainly be an option and is very affordable. Traverse City is an awesome place with a lot of culture. Ludington has beautiful beaches in the warm summer months. Mackinac Island is really neat as well. My future in-laws recently did an anniversary trip up there in October and they had a blast! The best way to do it is to stay at a bed-and-breakfast or go camping if you are into that
If it’s the winter months and you want to go somewhere with totally unique culture and a lot of history you could try even as far north as the Upper Peninsula (Might be best to travel up through Wisconsin). Houghton is a really cool town and a fascinating place to visit in the winter.

Oh, and one way to save lots of money on your wedding (if you’re looking for that!) is to do a lot of it yourself–you can buy paper for programs, and print your own; you can buy flowers (real or fake) and make your own bouquets, etc. We ended up getting married in Lent, so we couldn’t have alter flowers, but that saved a ton of money. Also, ask friends to see if they OR their friends have any decorations you can use for the hall (if you aren’t too particular). We borrowed a friend of a friend’s decorations and ended up purchasing only candles and the little decorative stones (we needed a different color…err…wanted). If you don’t have your dress yet, check and see if there are any “sample” ones that are marked down–the store model, etc. I ended up finding an absolutely gorgeous dress that was originally 1200, marked down to 100. It wasn’t my absolute favorite, but it was my second favorite, and didn’t even need altered! (My favorite was right at 900…too much given our budget!)
We ended up having 250 people at our wedding for under 3500…I’m not sure HOW much under, but it was a good deal. (That included our honeymoon).

Ah yes we went up there this summer and it was beautiful. Mackinac Island, Traverse City and Charlivoix (sp) At Charlivoix we found a wonderful beachside Hotel that was not only affordable but worked with us (they gave us a room for free because we had to get two rooms for our family. Look at Harmony State Park in SW Indiana - we stayed in a cabin there (fully equipped, very modern, full kitchen (save $ on eating out), had a fireplace (if you’re talking fall/winter) or central a/c (if you’re talking summer), absolutely lovely view of the Wabash River from one of the picnic areas in the park, great swimming pool (again if summer). Cost per night was only $85 (and no one to hear you thru thin hotel walls!)
Wanting to go a little farther afield - Chattanooga, TN is where we went for our honeymoon - not sure how much it’d cost today, but we had an awesome time at Rock City, Ruby Falls, the aquarium, and hit the Lost Sea on the way back.
If you’ve never been, you could try going to Marengo Caves, hike Clifty Falls and then stay in one of the chain hotels in Scottsburg - easy to do in a couple days and pretty inexpensive. (Clifty Falls is great in the fall for foliage, or summer for being able to hike the creek bed.)
The best honeymoon (imho) is one where you get to both go do something / somewhere neither of you have been before so you get a chance to make some awesome shared memories

Find a 4 star hotel on hotwire.com nearby. If you get 4 star, it will be nice. Hang out in the hotel and go and get take-out food to bring back in. Maybe rent a few movies to cuddly close and watch with popcorn. Who cares where you are. You’re in the hotel with your spouse on the honeymoon. That’s all that matters!

I don’t know where you are in Indiana but you might think of driving To Vincennes You could tour The William Henry Harrison Mansion The George Rogers Clark Memorial and The Old Cathedral You can even Go to Mass at the Old Cathedral It is the Oldest Catholic Church in Indiana and Vincennes is the Oldest City The reason I know this is because it is my Hometown. You can inquire about the price of the tours by looking it up online.
