Hi all -

…we were planning on going to Rome, but it’s turned out to be way too expensive…
I just wanted to throw this out there. My wife and I went to Italy and Rome for 2 weeks in 2005 and to California for 2 weeks in 2006. The California trip was actually more expensive because we didn’t have the options for cheap lodging and we had to rent a car.

I have a couple of suggestions.
  1. Washington D.C. (as many posters have already stated). Beyond the Basilica and all of the other Catholic locations in the area, you have the massive number of pure historical sites in the area as well. Almost all the major attractions in Washington D.C. are FREE! Certainly, all of the various 15 or so Smithsonian Museums are. That’s enough right there to keep you busy for a month! Transportation by subway is very easy. The only downside to D.C. is that hotels are exceptionally expensive.
  2. If you are willing to reconsider an international destination, might I suggest Madrid, Spain? Madrid is one of the least expensive cities in Western Europe. When I went to do research there, I stayed in a nice hotel (but plain) for only $45 per night, and I was only 2 blocks from the city center! To get a “honeymoon” worthy hotel 😛 , you’d probably be looking at $75-150 per night. There are many Catholic sites nearby, including the historic Toledo Cathedral. It is an easy city to get around. There is also the Palacio Real and El Escorial Palace, and the Prado, one of the greatest art museums in the world, full of Catholic art. I see you also live in Detroit, and Detroit is a big NWA gateway city to Europe. You might find a good airfare. If you go, be sure to sign up for their frequent flyer program, because the bonus miles for signing up, combined with the thousands of actual flight miles, will get you very close to a free domestic ticket in their program.

If you go to D.C., make sure you get to the Franciscan Monastery where they have replicas of the sites of the Holy Land. The Franciscans are in charge of the Holy Land shrines, and don’t miss the Rosary walk where they have the prayers in many different languages!👍

Peace,
Linda

A suggestion in my back yard that is exquisitely beautiful, in the US and yet quite exotic and and off the beaten honeymoon path…is the San Juan Islands. They are located north of Seattle, WA and are accessible by ferry or float plane. There are all sorts of activities from kayaking, hiking, biking, whale watching, sailing, crabbing, etc… that could make for such a romantic and active honeymoon. There are some charming inns and spas as well as some excellent dining if you want romance or pampering. The best time to visit is probably July/Aug/Sept for warmth and lots of sunny days. There is nothing particularly Catholic that comes to mind other than reveling in the most amazing of Cathedrals–the beauty of God’s creation.

Hi all -

I need some help on an idea for a honeymoon. My fiance and I are getting married in October of this year and we were planning on going to Rome, but it’s turned out to be way too expensive.
So…we want to go on an inexpensive honeymoon, preferably somewhere here in the States, where we can incorporate our Catholic faith within…
Please help!! =)

Thanks!
At first glance Hawaii may seem expensive, but it can be done reasonably with a great spiritual component. Fares to the Big Island direct Dallas to Kona were a bit over $300 last June. I went in late Sept/early October for $400 roundtrip to Honolulu with one stop. What a bargain! The “Big Island” of Hawaii has 2 airports with other one being in Hilo. Hilo is beautiful and much cheaper for hotels than the beach coast in Kona, but you can fly into one and out of the other if you wish. Costs vary widely betweent the different islands so check around.

I went with a girlfriend and flew into Hilo and toured the active volcano in the nat’l park. We spent 1 night there and sampled local cuisine on the cheap. Hilo is “old Hawaii” with great prices. We drove a rental down to Kona (3-4 hours around the coastal highway). We spent several days on the beach coast at a luxury resort that offered a huge discount to military/federal employees. There were other more reasonable places in that area also.

There are a number of incredible Catholic churches in Hawaii dating back to the missionary period such as little clapboard ones on the coast. You can catch another short flight and visit Molokai were Fr. Damian ministered to the lepers too.

We actually went to mass on the island of Oahu while staying with another old friend. Her parish in Mililani is modern construction, but near a fairly Catholic area. (Lots of Catholic Filipino immigrants came to Wahiawa to work at Dole even before statehood.) The glass walls slide open on one side to a walled garden so that mass is almost “open air” with just ceiling fans and no A/C.

Sign up online for a fare watcher service for whatever destinations you are considering first. It can be cheaper to fly overseas than to go somewhere in the lower 48.

Last year some coworkers went to Paris the week after Valentine’s Day for a little over $200 per person round trip, direct from Dallas. (off season prices) One lady joined the trip with less than 30 days on her ticket and still got it for $400. Hotels were also offering bargain prices, so they stayed in a mult-bedroom suite and split the cost.

Yes, the weather is a bit chilly but all of the great indoor things like the museums, cathedral and palace are still there and are less crowded off-peak. I’ve been in November and February to Paris and had a lovely time. You can also get the train from Paris to London for a decent price and spend a few days there for cheaper than flying there directly.

My wife and I went to San Francisco and rented a car for our honeymoon two years ago. We toured the wine country and stayed in small places that were affordable because it was the middle of the week. It was also the harvest time and when we told anyone along our journey that we were celebrating our honeymoon, we got some benefits from free food to upgrades in our rental car and champagne on the plane. By going up north along the coast it gave us the chance to enjoy each other’s company and stop where we wanted and when we wanted. The churches we visited were not historically significant to the world, but became important to us.

I’ve been to DC and comparing it to northern California is not the same category. Go to DC when you have children as a result of your honeymoon.

I really like the idea of Niagara on the Lake. It’s beautiful! And the Fatima shrine in Lewiston is AWESOME!! You’ll be here at a beautiful time of year and I think you would really enjoy the area. The wine tours by the lake are really neat and most of them are run by wonderful families who really enjoy giving guests a good experience.

Or instead of going south along the lake, you could go north to Toronto. There are incredible Broadway-comparable shows and great restaurants.

You do not need a passport, yet, but you might by October (it hasn’t been completely decided yet). It’s not a bad idea to get one anyway.

I’ve been to Charleston S.C. and I think that would be wonderful as well.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!! 🙂

God bless!

Trish

They are up north 🙂 in the Keweenaw, they open their Vesper Service to the public and it is wonderful. They also have a little bread and jam store.

It doesn’t matter where you go, as long as the hotel room is nice. It’s your honeymoon! You won’t be spending much time outdoors anyway! 😃

I forgot… my honeymoon was supposed to be in New Orleans but it happened to be scheduled at the same time Katrina hit there. We had to change plans quick so we ended up going to visit the Cathedral in our diocese. Of course as luck would have it, the cathedral was closed for renovations…but we did get to see some homeless man try to break in and the cops come looking for him…
We are planning a second honeymoon for our 5th anniversary down in New Orleans in a few years.

Yea for October weddings! My husband and I were married October 30, 2004.👍 We also wanted to go to Rome for our honeymoon, but could not afford it.

We went to Asheville, NC and visited the Biltmore Estate and Chimney Rock. It was BEAUTIFUL b/c of the time of year. The weather was perfect, we didn’t miss all the foliage like we thought we might, and we had a great time. We stayed at a wonderful bed & breakfast, and we even went to a daily Mass at the Basilica of St. Lawrence, which was just lovely! We also went to the Grove Arcade with cool shops and things downtown. At Chimney Rock, after going up, we went through the little village below that has little restaurants and shops. I wish we could have stayed there longer, but we came back to Alabama to go to the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville (Mother Angelica’s Shrine) to visit a friend who is in the cloister there. It was a great ending to a really awesome honeymoon.

We had a great honeymoon in Arizona. There’s lots of things to do, shopping, incredible sight seeing, and great restaurants (especially if you like authentic Mexican food!). It seemed to me, that everyone was really, really nice, too. Not like here in Ohio. We stayed in Scottsdale, but rented a car and traveled all over, even to the Grand Canyon. We drove south, toward Mexico and found the most incredible place. It was San Xavier Mission. It is a beautiful mission in the middle of the desert with the most amazing artwork inside. And the weather was really nice because it was April and not unbearably hot yet. As a matter of fact, it was downright chilly at the Grand Canyon. My husband lived in Arizona for several years and he wanted to show me where he went to school, etc. so that’s why we chose to go there on our honeymoon. I’m glad we did!! But no matter where you choose to go, you’ll have fun! Congratulations!
