I have to say I find myself agreeing with the Cardinal. The Chinese government lies to everyone, not only the Vatican, and they never keep their promises. They speak out of both sides of their mouths. I do not see the point of trying to compromise with the Chinese when they are the ones who are completely wrong on the issue. If liberal Europe and the liberal North American countries really want to live up to their religion of tolerance, they should tell China that unless human and religious rights are respected, all trade – military AND commercial – will stop immediately. However, seeing that liberals never live up to their own rhetoric, I don’t expect China to come under pressure any time soon. In fact, I do not think it is a stretch to say that some liberals are happy that Christians, especially Catholics, are being persecuted.
