The last bishop of Hong Kong, Michael Yeung, died in January this year after less than eighteen months in the post. The Vatican named his predecessor, John Tong Hon, now 80, as apostolic administrator, and eight months later has still not announced the name of the new bishop. There are said to be two main contenders, one who is strongly favored by the Communist rulers in Beijing, and the other who is very much on the anti-Communist side:

(Favored by Beijing) Stephen Lee, soon to be 63, a member of Opus Dei, currently the Bishop of Macau,

(Opposed by Beijing) Joseph Ha, 60, a Franciscan, currently the sole Auxiliary Bishop of Hong Kong.
