Well some people say that women aren’t honored in Islam, so I was wondering how they are “honored” in Christianity.
I understand that women are not allowed to be priests… is that correct? Why–if men and women are equal?
(ps–that is not a rhetorical question. I’m sure there’s a valid answer, and that’s what I want to hear… thanks in advance.)
O.K., I’ll grant you this one post, Sister Amy.
The question of priesthood restricted to some men is not only in Catholicism. In Judaism it was even more precisely restricted to Aaron and his descendants. No other clans among the Levites were called by God. and no one from the other tribes of Israel either.
In Christianity, Jesus called 12 men to be His apostles. No women. If it had been a matter of perfect life as to obeying the Commandments, He could have included His own mother, but He didn’t. Was He dishonouring her in doing so? No! It’s like when Jesus said: "As for sitting at my right hand or my left hand, it’s not for me to grant you that, they will be chosen by my Father! "
It’s not, as far as I know, a matter for discussion, even though it’s not easy to discern correctly God’s call… Priests are there to offer sacrifices, and Christian priests (at least the Catholic and Orthodox priests) offer a sacrifice in Jesus the only true High Priest. And so it’s not a matter to take lightly.
Is there a priesthood in Islam, Sister Amy? I don’t believe there is any, is there? I think imams are a bit like rabbis, “teachers”, are they not?
Now, I think my contribution to this thread will end here, if you don’t mind!
God bless you all!
