The Ten Commandments teach that one must honor their parents. What does this mean in the CC? Is an adult Catholic obligated to obey their parents in all things except where to obey would be sin, or are they only obligated to grant them social deference? Is there a hard and fast cutoff point (e.g. age 18, financial independence, the child’s own marriage, etc.) where the obligation switches from obedience to social deference?

For example, can a 35 year old independent married-with-children Catholic be told by his parents to quit his job as an airline pilot and go to medical school to become a doctor and be objectively guilty of sin for refusing?

“honor thy father and mother” is the command to ALL sons and daughters regardless of age. Obedience is for children.

One should be kind and considerate to their parents . You are old enough and mature enough to exercise the free will that God has given you. Your life choices are up to you, not your parents. That does not mean you do not honor them.🙂
