So, I was wondering how one would address a Patriarch who is also a Cardinal. Traditionally, a Cardinal is addressed as “Your Eminence” while a Patriarch is addressed as “Your Beatitude”. So, in a way, I’m also asking which has a higher honorary rank: Cardinal or Patriarch.

From James-Charles Noonan Jr’s book “The Church Visible”: If a Patriarch has been named a cardinal, his precedence, rank and privileges becomes those of a member of the College of Cardinals.

A Patriarch, Catholicos or head of sui iurus Church is always addressed by the honorific of Head of Church. Cardinal is only a personal honor bestowed by the Latin Church, it gives certain privileges in the function of the Holy See of Rome and it’s organizational arms.

The title Patriarch, Catholicos, etc as Head and Father of each particular Church is supreme.

It would be proper to refer to the Patriarch named Cardinal as “Your Beatitude” or “Your Eminent Beatitude”.

Also note, Canon 58 of the Code of Canons of Oriental Churches says: “Patriarchs of Eastern Churches precede all bishops of any degree everywhere in the world, with due regard for special norms of precedence established by the Roman Pontiff”

The muto proprio of Paul VI also addresses this:

Archbishop Josyf Slipyj, Major Archbishop of the UGCC, was His Beattitude Josyf Cardinal Slipyj in most formal address. The press, in typical latin mode, usually referred to him by Title-lastname Cardinal Slipyj; it would be more proper to short form it as His Beattitude Josyf, or if his cardinalate is important in the discussion, His Beattitude Cardinal Slipyj.

In informal address, within the Byzantine Rite tradition, it would be Father Archbishop or even Father Bishop. Or if confusion as to which archbishop, Father Archbishop Josyf. I’m not certain if “Your beattitude” would even be used.

That’s a good point, informally, the Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Church is referred to as “Bava” - same as Papa or Pope or our Father. Formally in Syriac “Moran Mor Baselios”, which translates literally as “Our Lord, Lord Baselios”. Baselios itself is an Imperial title for sovereigns, originally used exclusively for the Christian Emperor.

All other bishops are called “Aboon Mor” - our Father, Lord (ordination name).

For Malankara Syrians united to the Pope, we refer to the Holy Father as Mar Papa, literally “Lord Father, or Holy Father” liturgically.

Are you implying that a Cardinal is higher in rank than a Patriarch?

I am not implying anything, I am just quoting what James-Charles Noonan Jr has written in his wellknown book “The Church Visible”:

You need to read the section on the Eastern Churches - Noonan notes there that the Eastern Patriarchs are different in precedence from the western.

The section you’re quoting is talking about the Western Patriarchs (Lisboa, Venice, West Indies), not the eastern. Who are just Archbishops with fancy titles.

The Patriarch should ideally retain their patriarchal title since their joining the College does not effect their reality of their order. Patriarch is an ordained order of those who lead Churches and is reflective of the celestial rank of the Seraphim - Cardinal is an institutional position that is neither necessary nor Episcopal in character.
