Honoring Abusive Parent?

Before we were married, my wife and I decided that I would take my late mothers maiden name. My father was abusive growing up, we have since very much limited the relationship. I changed the name as a tribute to my mother and her family, whom I am very close with, as well as a way to protect my family from my fathers side, whom are not people I want my children to spend time with. Both my wife and I felt it was for the best.

My question is, did I commit a sin against the fourth commandment?

No, you did not. We are not required to subject ourselves to abuse, or to pretend it didn’t happen.
 
I agree with Agnes. You most certainly did not sin by detaching yourself from an abusive father. You did the right thing for yourself, your wife, and definitely your children. Be at peace. God bless… - Rob in Oregon
