I have smoked the hookah a few times in social settings. It is legal in the US, and there’re hookah bars. It’s supposed to relax you, etc. Does anyone know if it’s okay for Catholics to smoke the hookah? Thank you.

First of all, why would it be illegal if you are using tobacco?

It’s okay for Catholics to smoke from pipes.

That you need to ask the question at all is the problem for you really.

Do you want someone to tell you no.

Do you want someone to tell you yes.

If so why do you need permission from someone else that it is or it isn’t okay for you to do?

We are all uniquelly different and God loves us all especially so. You could have lots of posts telling you how its wrong to abuse your body when the Holy Spirit is living in there. How would that alter your habit.

You could have lots of posts telling you, fine, go ahead its not illegal. General smoking isn’t illegal but a form of self harm since you are killing yourself very slowly. So a specific drug, then what is that doing to your system when you could be finding other non polluted ways to help you relax your body. Is it simply for relaxation? Then I think you need to find other ways because you wont always have the drug and your body will get used to it and so you will need more and eventually your system will shut down because of the vicious circle.

But the choice is yours and how you argue what you do with God. You do not need permission from anyone here to continue to do or to stop you from doing. The permission is given to you of yourself through God.

Take Care

Personally I would check with my doctor in addition to checking whether my religion allowed this. It doesn’t seem to me healthy to be inhaling any kind of smoke on purpose.

Smoking tobacco is not sinful in and of itself.

Remember that sinfulness and civil/criminal legality are not always the same thing. Some things are legal (abortion), that are sinful. Other things may be illegal (smoking or drinking), that are not necessarily sinful - in and of themselves.

I have looked into the problems with smoking hookah and found that it is very bad for the lungs.

Therefore, I strongly suggest you don’t purposely put anything into your body that is damaging to your health. We all need to stay healthy and strong so that we can do what Jesus asks of us - to take care of those less fortunate. 🙂

The CCC states:

364 The human body shares in the dignity of “the image of God”: it is a human body precisely because it is animated by a spiritual soul, and it is the whole human person that is intended to become, in the body of Christ, a temple of the Spirit:232

Man, though made of body and soul, is a unity. Through his very bodily condition he sums up in himself the elements of the material world. Through him they are thus brought to their highest perfection and can raise their voice in praise freely given to the Creator. For this reason man may not despise his bodily life. Rather he is obliged to regard his body as good and to hold it in honor since God has created it and will raise it up on the last day. 233

Even though I heard people say that since the smoke is clear it doesn’t harm you. I contrarily heard somewhere, that any smoke that enters your lungs are bad because they make the tissue or membrane do work it’s not meant to do, and since it’s moisture in a form then it can cause infection. I wish I still had the website, I know it was someone posting about why people should just stop thinking pot is completely harmless.

Question
Hookah smoking: Is it safer than cigarettes?
Is hookah smoking safer than smoking cigarettes? I’ve been told that the water used in the hookah makes the tobacco less toxic.
Answer
from Richard D. Hurt, M.D.
Hookah smoking is not safer than cigarette smoking. Also known as narghile, shisha and goza, a hookah is a water pipe with a smoke chamber, a bowl, a pipe and a hose. Specially made tobacco is heated, and the smoke passes through water and is then drawn through a rubber hose to a mouthpiece. The tobacco is no less toxic in a hookah pipe, and the water in the hookah does not filter out the toxic ingredients in the tobacco smoke. Hookah smokers may actually inhale more tobacco smoke than cigarette smokers do because of the large volume of smoke they inhale in one smoking session, which can last as long as 60 minutes.

While research about hookah smoking is still emerging, evidence shows that it poses many dangers:

Hookah smoke contains high levels of toxic compounds, including tar, carbon monoxide, heavy metals and cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens). In fact, hookah smokers are exposed to more carbon monoxide and smoke than are cigarette smokers. As with cigarette smoking, hookah smoking is linked to lung and oral cancers, heart disease and other serious illnesses. Hookah smoking delivers about the same amount of nicotine as cigarette smoking does, possibly leading to tobacco dependence. Hookah smoke poses dangers associated with secondhand smoke. Hookah smoking by pregnant women can result in low birth weight babies. Hookah pipes used in hookah bars and cafes may not be cleaned properly, risking the spread of infectious diseases.

Thanks Lax16

I was hoping for a specific medical piece. The way I found out about how bad it was was from an opinion piece, even though it had medical references. The one you gave was pretty clear. I used to live near a coffee shop that was also a hookah bar. I saw a lot of young kids having it. I don’t know I guess they thought it was this exotic fad or something. If only they knew right. I’d rather smoke a cigar at least I know what I am doing to myself. I don’t smoke anything actually, although I do like the smell of certain cigars, i’m not a smoker.

You’re welcome!

I had to quickly educate myself on the topic of hookah smoking when our 17 year old son told us he did it with friends and that it was “healthy.”

Yes, the kids are having fun smoking hookah with others and for some reason feel it is a safe alternative to other forms of smoking.

It isn’t legal EVERYWHERE in the US. In my town the hookah bars were shut down because they were really smoking pot and “spice” Actually smoking is banned in any public place. And while I like the clean air, and idea of no one smoking I wonder just how “American” it is to start banning things that are personal choices. However in the case of hookah: If marijuana is a gateway drug then Hookah is a gateway to marijuana. Most of the patrons and bar owners were of middle eastern decent and anyone who was not Middle eastern were young kids that were old enough to smoke but not old enough to drink who hung out in these bars and used pot smoking bongs to smoke “tobacco”

Few things, even Spam, are dangerous if done in moderation. I would have to question whether this type of tobacco use can be done in moderation. Few people smoke cigarettes in moderation, but many use pipes and cigars occassionally.

They were shut down for smoking pot – not for the device used. Outlawing a hookah pipe is like outlawing rolling papers or outlawing cans, etc.

If you think hookah is just for marijuana, you are too much influenced by drug culture and have not investigated its cultural orgins.

Actually they were shut down because in my city is is illegal to have any kind of smoking establishment. I should know, I was on the legislative committee that investigated them. I think I am pretty well versed in what “hookah” is about and definitely its cultural origins. In fact in many places it is being used as an introduction to Islamic recruiting of the younger generation.

I should clarify. Hookah smoking is legal (but silly) but in my city hookah bars are not. So what you have left is people smoking “tobacco” out of bongs in their private houses… I can almost assure you that they are not smoking tobacco.

BTW a Hookah pipe is considered drug paraphernalia in my neck of the woods.

I love this sentence. I like how it admits that it is for smoking MJ but makes sure to say that it isnt JUST for that.:rotfl:

I wonder what will become of Spam, with the growing concern over “pink slime”. 😃

It’s always something though isn’t it. I know people of middle eastern decent, that smoke in the homes, with family, but I think when you grew up on it or in the culture you really don’t think about looking up how bad something is.
