Idea is that even if you aren’t doing anything immoral it’s better if you don’t give people cause to think you might be. If you go sit outside a police station with a gigantic shishi, whether you’ve got tobacco in there or pot, I give you two minutes tops before people in uniforms are asking you a lot of very personal questions. The same reasoning’s often applied to cohabitation before marriage – even if you aren’t committing fornication, people may think you are.

There actually is a hookah bar in Cleveland. It is frequented primarily by young people (early 20’s) of Arabic descent. Ohio passed a smoking ban but the hookah bar is exempt because over 75% of their business is from the sale of the tobacco. People gather around in groups and all pick up a “nozzle” or whatever they are called; I never went to the place, just read about it in the paper. They won’t let patrons smoke cigarettes or cigars in the place, just the hookahs. I don’t know if the OP is talking about a place like this or if he wants to buy his own hookah. I would stay away from a place that sells hookahs to the public because rarely does anyone buy them in those stores for legal use with tobacco.

As a way of smoking tobacoo, probably not better or worse then cigarettes, cigars, etc. Tobacoo is legal if you are over age 21.
But other stuff, herbs for example, might be marginal. Smoking catnip is probably OK, especially if you are a cat.
Smoking that you-know-what illegal weed definately is not :tsktsk:

Actually, health-wise, it’s probably worse, because the water cools the smoke, so the smoker is able to inhale even deeper than on a cigarette. I never tried a hookah, I just know how they are used because the newspaper article explained it.

I went to a hookah bar several times here (couldn’t help it - they had karaoke). Anyhoo - nasty little habit, in my opinion. Some of the aromas, though, are kinda pleasant, but not most.

We have several in SE Michigan - one in a Middle Eastern restaurant I go to all the time. I don’t see anything wrong/sinful about it. As long as it’s being used legally. Unless you consider deliberately doing something that harms your body (smoking tobacco) sinful. Then it would be.

Sometimes Eastern folk use perfumed tobacco, apparently, and this is easier to do with a hookah.

You should hear what Fr. Corapi’s veiw of tobacco use is. Personally I wish the stuff would all die off, too many family members of mine have struggled with addictions or have died.
