So yesterday my pastor did the unthinkable…

He centered his homily on birth control and abortion!!!
Apparently he was born in 1973 (they year abortion became legal) and as this is the March for Life week, he decided to give quite a homily condemning birth control and abortion!!!

Anyone else hear a similar homily this weekend???

I am so proud to have a priest that isn’t afraid to speak up!!!

Not likely to hear that from our pastor who has told me himself that when a family told him they were going to get an abortion for their FASD teenager his reply was “You have to do what’s best for your family.”:bigyikes:

He has a DUTY to shepard the flock given to him according to the teachings of the infallible Catholic Church and to those that much is given, much will be expected in return.

Yep. We had a homily on abortion. Had a fact sheet on abortion handed out as well. Knights of Columbus (who were responsible for having the words “under God” added to the Pledge of Allegiance) were also on hand handing out fliers that when saying the “pledge of allegiance”, we should end with “born and unborn”.
 
We had a pastor in Denver who started such a sermon with: " I know I am going to receive some really nasty letters…" He was a great priest. He was soon after transferred to a middle of nowhere parish. And no our priest now did not say anything.

I didn’t do or say anything because I’ve learned from experience that it all it does is make my job miserable for the rest of the week and accomplishes nothing.

FAS is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. (I don’t know what the D stands for.)

People who have FAS are in essence born without the ability to discern good from evil, and without the ability to fear danger, nor the ability to learn how to avoid it. They have normal to above-normal intelligence, though, and they can learn how to fake their way through life. They can be very charming and sweet one moment, and have a knife to your throat the next - you don’t want to be around them when they are under any kind of stress. (Some people think that the Roman Emperor Caligula probably had FAS.)

I suppose they are assuming that the child to be born will also have FAS.

Could you please cite a reference for this diagnosis. I don’t believe it is correct.
 
Answering the original thread… Yes, our pastor addressed this - he is also attending the March for Life tomorrow. Last week the deacon also gave a homily on abortion including the effects on the mother, father and the family of God. K. of C. gave out candles to burn on our porches starting tonight and through the night. Every week we pray for the end to the slaughter of the innocents.
 
I think so much of this boils down to how the message is delivered from the ambo. Someone like Fr. Mark on EWTN could make all the points in a beautiful and non-offensive homily. It would still be powerful and resonate, but it would not be offensive. Fr. Frank Pavone, while certainly more hard-edged on this subject, also delivers wonderful homilies.

Conversely other homilists almost seem to want to be offensive when it comes to this subject. While they might feel that it’s a good way to “wake people up”, it does nothing but turn me off. I have flipped the channel more than once during the televised Mass on EWTN because some homilist was being offensive.

Thankfully I haven’t felt the need to do that for some time.
 
Personally, I welcome it when the priest teaches about something that we all should be paying attention to… I am sick to death of the tip-toe around the “hard” teachings… I want to hear more! I want my children to hear more!!! I want people to squirm in the pews if they are uncomfortable about something they know is wrong yet continue to indulge in!!!

FASD comes with a multitude of manifestations. Some victims have a typical facial appearance while others don’t. One of the main characteristics of people with FASD is their lack of impulse control.
 
Yup, heard a good hard hitting homily on Life - all aspects of it including abortion and embryonic stem cell research. I can’t remember when we haven’t heard such a homily on Pro-life Sunday!

We also hear homilies about chemical and barrier methods of birth control and their evils etc.

We have some great Priests who are not afraid to say it like it is.

And that’s the fallacy – that one need necessarily be offensive in order to effectively and thoroughly preach on this subject. That’s not the case and homilists like Fr. Mark Mary are shining examples of how to preach on this terribly sensitive matter.

I had a student with that when I was teaching… I was a “special” meaning that I saw the entire school so I taught this kid from kindergarten until I left teaching when he was in 7th grade. The kid was a terror. No one could control him. His mother was a sweetheart and we tried hard to control this kid. We had found out that he was adopted and diagnosed with FAS. But his mother did not want to hear it. He was one of the reasons I gave up teaching. Once his mother punished him by sending him to his room…and the kid called 911 and told them his mother had him imprisioned in the house. She was mortified. I never found out whatever happened to him, but he would be 22 now.
