Hey everyone,

It seems as though there are a lot of dating/loneliness/singles threads lately! I am looking for support in terms of having hope.

A few weeks ago, the relationship I was in came to an end. It was not very healthy for me - things escalated quickly and he turned out to be a very different man than I thought him to be. I guess that is the risk of dating, often finding a bad egg. The good news is that I have been going for some pretty heavy duty spiritual direction and counselling, seeking the reasons it went the way it did, and discerning what God is calling me to do next. In the end it all turned out to be a blessing, because it gave me the courage to take a step back from my career (secular nursing - many ethical issues for a Catholic!), sell my house in the town I was not so happy living in, and begin to discern other career ideas.

I truly feel that I am called to marriage. I would very much love a meaningful relationship that leads to marriage, openness to life (children would be wonderful), and would be happy to spend my days helping my spouse get to heaven (and have some fun in the process). Life is most beautiful with family.

But I turn 34 this year - people have told me that I am not so young anymore. Trust me, I’m trying! I do believe that God needed me to work on myself more and start making changes in my life (career, living area). At the moment I am applying to jobs and looking for a rental in a very large city. It would allow me to meet more people, get more involved in more things that I am interested in (I’m the sole single lady at church, its me, kids, their parents, and their grandparents!). So I’m on the right track, and I will continue with my counseling and spiritual direction.

But what I’m struggling with most is finding hope about being too “old”. I am sure there are plenty of women out there who married and had children in their mid to late 30’s, I sure would like to hear from them or about them. However, I am aware that God may have other plans for me, if he wants me to meet the man of my dreams when I’m 53, then so be it, I sure hope he has adorable grand kids though 🙂

Thank you 🙂

Believe me, 35 is not that old. I was forty when I first married. I had spent my life making a career. International travel around the world for work; big salary, company car, parking space, limos to the airport, five star hotels blah blah blah. Was I happy? No, I wanted to share my life with a good woman. When I put my mind to something I achieve it. Either that or Mary answered my woosey prayers by a quiet word to her Son. I am betting on the latter.

Anyway, found a woman aged 41 who early in our dating stayed by me when I went to hospital with an asthma attack. I am a very cynical man who has found little good in humanity most of my life, so I was quietly impressed. She has been my wife for 21 years and we have 1 son, conceived when she was 42!! He is now 20, works seven days a week and achieves a 6.3 grade average coming into his last year of an IT degree. He hopes to become a slum lord by the age of 30. So we did well in raising him. (Only kidding, a kind and generous hearted son who remains Christian which is a dying art in the young.)
So God can do anything He wills and He wills only good for those who love him. (So my wife must love Him a lot…)
My health has failed and I am on oxygen 24/7 slowly dying and my wife is my nurse and constant lover. She is the pearl of great price for me. I am so saddened I bring so little joy to my wife’s life, but I did give her our son, so I am not a complete waste of space. (I can still make her laugh.)
Don’t give up on God and He will not give up on you. Pray to Mary. I have always found that finding the influential friend a good introduction…

Petaro,

You have a way with words most certainly!~ Thanks for sharing your story and God bless you and your wife ( and slumlord son …:D.) abundantly.

God Bless,

Mary.
