My nephew nor I are Catholic. Can I still have a mass for him?
Yes, you can. You can contact a local parish and they’ll help you, or you can call a religious order and find out about their perpetual Masses. The Oblate Fathers, the Franciscans…many others offer Masses daily in perpetuity for souls. Frequently when Catholics die, other Catholics arrange these Masses to be said for them. I have a box full of cards from when my mother died, and it gives me great comfort to know that there are hundreds of Masses being said every day for her, and many others too.

The thing to remember is that only God knows for sure, so there’s always hope for those who have gone before us. We believe that people with mortal sins on their souls are going to be condemned but we don’t know who does or doesn’t have a mortal sin. Even if we know someone’s action would constitute a mortal sin, they may not have had the capacity to commit that mortal sin. We only know what we can see for ourselves, not what’s in someone’s heart and mind. Leave it to God.
