Hope vs. Want

What is the difference between hoping for something and wanting something?

I know the Bible says we shall not want but how is it any different than hoping for something? I know it is wrong if we want a new car but how is that any different than if we hope for a new car or another scenario is what if your wife left you and you want her to return to you versus if you hope she returns to you?

I’m interested in the answers … because I truly don’t know the differences when it comes to what you are asking for. The only thing I can relate it to is in when we are asking our Lord for a grace … I would hope for the grace that I am asking for … I can’t want anything from our Lord … I must hope that He chooses to give me what I am in need of.

Hope is more transcendent in nature. If your homeless and destitute, you would hope for a new car. If it’s just a matter of saving a little more money and having realistic expectations about a new car; that’s wanting.

Maybe someone else will articulate it better.

In the phrase “I shall not want” the word “want” means “lack,” not desire. So you won’t be lacking anything you need. If you read a modern version of the Bible that will be easy to see.

So no worries - you can want & hope. 🙂

It is - I grew up on the KJV. For the most part I’m happy with newer translations, but I still prefer the Psalms & Proverbs in older English.

It is how we learned them… so they stay with us.
