I’m not a huge fan of On Eagles’ Wings, but not for the reasons expressed so far. I just think it has an appalling tune. Really bad melody.
However, Psalm 90 or 91 (depends on your translation!) is my very favorite psalm of all… Part of the Benedictine service of Compline, which I love very, very much.
I’m not a huge fan of holding hands during the Our Father, but I think the Orans position is highly appropriate, and extremely ancient in practice. How many of you know that kneeling with one’s hands together is a medieval development, which originated in the feudal ceremony by which one man became the “man” of another? It’s not my favorite image of my relationship with God.
Horizontal vs. vertical always makes me think of Romanesque architecture vs. Gothic architecture. While I find a good Gothic church to be an inspiring place, I prefer the gentle returning to earth of the arches of a simple Romanesque church. Gothic always seems to be more proud, and Romanesque more humble. Totally subjective, I know!
