A broken clock tells the correct time twice a day.
Are you implying that fortune cookies are evil? If not, then I apologize.
Most fortunes that I have ever read were merely bits of advice and supposedly taught you how to speak Chinese (I doubt the pronunciation was acurate). I would seriously hope no one ever takes them seriously.

That’s not what I said. My point is that anything anybody says can happen to somebody. If it happens that whatever written on a fortune cookie or other horoscope type happens to the person reading it they may think there is something to it and continue “consulting” these things. Look at the comments above by slywakka250.
The weak in faith can be easily led astray. We should avoid everything like that. I do not believe people read them merely as entertainment. Better to avoid things that might lead to sin.

By purposely avoiding something you only strengthen the temptation of it. If someone is weak in faith and led astray by a horoscope then it’s quite possible that ANYTHING could have lead them astray. I will occasionally read mine for the sheer stupidity of them.

Horoscopes are notorious for using the Forer Effect more commonly known as the Barnum Effect as in P.T. Barnum of Barnum and Bailey and the slogan “we’ve got something for everyone”. They use very generalized statements that ANYONE could apply to their own life or personal experiences.

My horoscope for today (Gemini)…

“You’re unusually possessive today, but you can shake things up in a good way if you push yourself. See if you can get your friends to help out as you sort through your jealousy and other odd emotions.”

I can find a way to make my experiences from today match this… as I’m sure a lot of people can.

Taurus is

“Your great emotional energy today should yield at least one big insight that can be used to enhance your life or a relationship. Don’t be shy about following up on hunches and seeing what comes of them”

I can make this match also… actually easier so than my own.

My point is that if someone takes the words above or any similar ones from a newspaper or online horoscope reading seriously and replaces their faith with it they were already weak in faith and weak minded to begin with… not to mention crazy.

What are you saying in your first sentence? You seem to be implying that we should never resist temptation and should go ahead and sin or have I misunderstood you?

So, before I finally put this thread to rest, If I were to have read a certain horoscope (the one two posts above me, to be specific), and I didn’t believe it (but still read through it even though I knew my conscience would be bugging me in about five seconds), would I have sinned? It’d be ironic to sin on a section dedicated to not sinning… but still 😊

The only movies and books you must avoid are pornographic ones. You can watch/read whatever else you want, although anyone who is weak in faith should probably stay away from anything which might lead them away from the Church.
I Agree With This.👍

Short answer - No… what you describe is not sinful.
Reading the horoscope in the newspaper and fortune cookies are harmless so long as you recognize them for what they are - pure entertainment.

Now if you were to go and have a horoscope done - that would be another matter…

Peace
James
I Have No Problems With Fortune Cookies------They Can Quite Encouraging (And Intentionally/Unintentionally Funny At Times).

OTOH, I Agree With Your Assesment Of Horoscopes. I OCCASSIONALLY Read Them But That’s It----I Would Never Agree To Having A Birth Chart/Natal Chart/Horoscope Done. Might Lead To Temptation.👍

Let me answer for myself first. No, it was not a sin when I read the post that you mention.

What do you mean about your conscience bugging you? If your true, well-trained conscience tells you clearly not to do something, then do not go ahead with your plans to do it. But since you are asking if it was a sin, I suspect you do not mean that by saying “bugging”. If you are suspecting that you are feeling guilty for reasons besides your conscience, then this is a reason to hesitate before acting, and discern first if it is your conscience or some other voice before you act. It may be that your conscience is telling you that you need to avoid certain things until you get your ducks in a row and study the matter sufficiently.

But, it could be like me. I’ve spent the time to figure it out for thank-you notes. I’ve always felt like an evil sinner if I don’t write thank-you notes to people in so many situations. I’ve figured out this is not my conscience. This is my mother, haunting me.😃 (no, she’s alive, but it is the remains of years of training, training that is not my conscience) I have to repeat to myself that it is okay to not write thank-you notes for every little thing. Even so, I still “feel” guilty sometimes about them. But I am not sinning.

Do consider my point that it is a genuine duty to form your conscience, and if your conscience is telling you that it is not yet sufficiently certain on a topic, then you must listen to it and spend the time to form it, *before *you act. It would be wrong to ignore our conscience if it is complaining that it needs more information before acting.

Somebody please correct me if I am wrong, but reading horoscopes is a sin (possibly serious) even if you do not believe in them. This is because Catholics believe that the demonic forces can communicate through this medium. The horoscopes might appear to be rather vague but nevertheless we believe that people can become influenced through demonic forces through people innocently looking at horoscopes, even if they don’t intend to adhere to what is being advised by their particular daily horoscope. But again someone please correct me if I am mistaken as I have been mistaken on similar things in the past. (Or somebody back me up on this if I am right please :o)

After this thread (and some others on the much more serious Ouija Board) I have to say that I will try to not ever willingly read a horoscope again (hopefully I can keep this). I don’t know if it’s sinful, but best to be safe, right?

However, I have also learned that the Magic 8 ball and Fortune Cookies are not sinful at all unless majorly abused.

Poor wording on my part. Sorry. I wouldn’t say that’s always the case (obviously an alcoholic shouldn’t go into a bar etc.) but as far as horoscopes or any other such nonsense goes… yes I would say avoiding the temptation is just silly and will only make one wonder further “why shouldn’t I read it?” Horoscopes as I pointed out in my prior post are sheer nonsense and the idea that reading one will cause one to sin is ridiculous. Now… reading one and analyzing it to the point that you try to make it true and then start to follow yes is likely sinful… but if someone actually does that they need to ask their parents why they were never educated properly on the difference between real life and money making schemes meant to victimize the weakminded.
