Horrible advice in the confessional. Should I report it to my Bishop?

Indeed. Showing disrespect for a learned, gentle and balanced member like Br. JR is not going to win any points here. Seems the OP is just fishing for an argument. The only danger to the faith from the Zen-master priest, is to those who don’t have much faith to begin with.

I’m bailing from this thread.
 
Once more, go with your gut, call the Diocese or the Deanery.

When we someday run out of wonderful Catholic teachers on prayer, then we can move on to other false religious. For now, stick with the Catholics (John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Fr Dubay, Fr Phipippe, Fr Groeschel - oh, and John Michael Talbot has a wonderful album of music that is prayer, including “The Jesus Prayer”)
