Our child is set to be baptized and it has been put off for far too long. I should say that there is also a very ugly divorce also going on.

Our child’s father first threatened an attempt to baptize the child without my consent (even though I am an active practicing Catholic and he is not). He realized this would be tough for him and I extended an offer to have her baptized in the church that I attend and am a member of.

He has not agreed on a date (even though it is set), he told me I could not choose the Godfather and demanded I chose the Godmother. I have spoken with Father several times about the struggles with this man, why I filed for divorce and the abuse and controlling behavior I have endured with him, so he is aware of who we are dealing with.

I went ahead (for my child’s sake) and picked a Godmother. I met with the Deacon and did class for the baptism preparation. I sent my child’s father notification that he needed to come to the church and give his information and speak with the Deacon. I got a call from Deacon yesterday stating that my child’s father was disputing the date and chose a man for my child’s Godfather.

Here is my issue this “man” he chose. This is the same person that offers up his wife for my ex husband to have sex with. I have proof of this and told Deacon I would gladly provide it. This woman (married) has been to every court proceeding in our divorce (when there has been no need for her to be there). She has highly protested court rulings and in my attorney’s opinion, protested way too much for a woman is is happily married and should have her own life and concerns. She also accompanies my husband during visitations with our child and the very young child refers to her as “daddy’s girlfriend” and even expressed to me that they kiss in front of the child.

All throughout our marriage these people were never present in my ex husband’s life, they only appeared after I filed for divorce. I also found out that he is an active member on several meet up for sex forums. It is bad enough that he exposes our child to these people and their lifestyle when he has her for visits, let alone would disgrace church and the eucharist by bringing that situation and irreverence into mass. It has been weighing on me heavily on how to possibly “accept” that this may happen and a person of those sort of beliefs being a representative for my child in the eyes of the church when they are clearly not practicing Catholic (let alone any other Christian ways).

My only saving grace is that my child’s father has not been able to provide any documentation that this person (Godfather) is an active, practicing, Catholic and it has been several weeks. It took me one day to get a letter for the child’s Godmother and that is because she is, in fact, a practicing Catholic. I have been praying non stop that god does not allow this (for our child’s sake) as it would be a disgrace.

However, my child’s father has a way of “paying” for things to happen. I explained all of this to Deacon and asked for Father to call me so I could also explain my concerns. Deacon told me that if they should come up with documentation that they will scrutinize it and make sure it is official.

Is there anything else I can do? (talking to our child’s father about his choice would be useless)

I would put it in the hands of the clergy as well as in the hands of God and the courts. Know that you have picked a good Godmother. Also know that hopefully in court that the secular courts will curtail any unsupervised visitation with these people since you have proof. Puzzleannie would probably be the best person on the forums to get a hold of as she deals with most of this stuff on a parish level. God bless.

even if the divorce is not final there should be an interim custody agreement. Legally the parish has to follow the wishes of the custodial parent and we can get in a lot of trouble, canonically and civilly, in disregarding those sad realities.

Who has custody? That parent will make this decision.

Do bear in mind the choice of godparent has no bearing on the validity of the sacrament.

Since your ex seems to be making this a bone of contention in the divorce proceedings bring it up with your attorney.

also in the case of the baptism of your child, precisely because there is such conflict you should be dealing directly with the priest as there are issues only he, not the deacon, can decide and help you with. call to day for an appointment to see Father about “an urgent pastoral matter”, that is the language you use to get through the secretaries.

Prayers for you and your child.

Blessed Mother, wrap your mantle around this child and protect her.

Thank you for the advice I will definitely be following it.

I have Domiciliary custody of the child and make all the major decisions. I have not addressed this with Father, but I am guessing it is time to do so and go over the Deacon’s head. I left a voicemail for him today hoping to hear back. If not I will see him Sunday after mass and speak with him directly.

In your divorce you can ask for “spiritual custody” of your child and I would recommend doing that. In that way she cannot be kept from church if he’s in a mood and you can be assured that she will be raised in the church.

I will be praying for you.

Wow I did not know that, thank you Lorrie. I will definitely do this.
