I was recently told that teenagers are now wearing bracelets with beads on them. There is some game that attaches a sexual act to the color of the bead. In some cases the beads can be claimed in exchange for a favor (by anyone). I’m not sure if this is widespread or just in the Northeast.

I also have heard that sexual favors among teenagers are becoming the equivalent of a handshake in public schools and teenage circles. Has anyone else heard of this or noticed this increase in immoral orgy style mentality in teens? From what I have been hearing it’s pretty common in my area but perhaps not everyplace. I’m posting this for a parental heads up if you have teens.

…i remember a quote by a man one time… he said the youth of today would be the downfall of the world. Their decadence and sin would sour the world and he saw no redemption in sight for them… he feared the loss of society as they new it, and truly felt the world was lost when the younger generation took control of society… his name was SOCRATES!..

…he lived and died almost 400 years before Christ…

…BE NOT AFRAID… I WILL BE WITH YOU TILL THE END OF TIME…

Peace!👍

Don’t believe everything you hear, a lot of it is just sensationalism.

Here’s an interesting look at the “sex bracelet” myth from an urban legends website:

lol,

Thanks for the heads up, I will tell the person I heard this from about the urban legend.

I am from the NorthEast, as well. Oral sex is not considered sex anymore (thanks to Bill Clinton?), but is on the same level as kissing. Oral sex is a common experience on school buses, even in middle school. And many young ladies I know consider sex to be actual penetration, anything else is just casual and no big deal. I live in a mid to upperclass area in the suburbs, known as one of the “better and safer” places to live.😦

Madness,

I have been hearing the same thing of late. Parents and teachers need to get with the program and make this end.

Oh, come on guys. Stop with the gross generalizations about teenagers, about the Northeast, and about rampant sexual promiscuousness. Darrell, you don’t say where you come from nor do you say how old you are. But as a parent of a Catholic teenage daughter in the Northeast, it makes me crazy to read such sensational allegations. If you are a young adult, I would venture to say the trends in the Northeast are pretty much the same as where you are. And if you are an old fella, then instead of complaining about the wantonness of today’s youth, consider what you can do about it. Do you teach CCD? Do you help out with Boy Scouts or 4-H? I’ll bet if you did anything with youth, you would be celebrating the great kids today, rather than posting such stuff on a Catholic website. Yes, there are bad kids today. But there were 50 years ago too.

I am a parent of teenage son in the Tri-State area (NY, NJ, CT)…there are bad kids everywhere…not just in the NE!

Not to rain on the parade here but I was a substitute teacher in the schools that I grew up in so I have a little basis for camparison and just by raw numbers I would have to say that there are more pregnencies in just the 8 years since I graduated. Kids are getting exposed to more and at a younger age. From what I have seen the best thing you can do is instill right from wrong FROM DAY ONE. After the age of 5 a childs morality is about 90% hardwired. That means that only you have the power to influence 90% of your childs morality. Sadly many children I saw had pairents who would rather let TV or public schools raise their children (I have some horror stories, meth is pretty popular in my area so there are some sad, sad situations).

I can’t generalize to the rest of the country but in my area it seems like gangs and teen pregnenct just keep getting worse each year.

I can only speak about kids where we live - a suburb of Chicago but the kids seem pretty awesome. They are well mannered - they do lots of service projects for the community - they seem very focused on school & getting into a good college. I see them at mass with their parents & I know lots from a theater group we’re apart of. If they are any reflection of the youth of today, I’m not worried in the least.

I agree that parents need to do THEIR job of parenting - that’s what my husband and I are doing. And pray ALOT. The rest I leave up to God.

hehe,

I’m 36 years old and I live in CT. I can say for sure that not all kids are bad. I can also say for sure that almost all kids act in a different manor when they are away from there parents at that age. I dont want to be Mr teenage doom and gloom. On the other hand I dont want to live in a dreamworld. Try to also remember that there are plenty of sparkling little teenage gangmembers and dope dealers in public schools.

So what is your interest in today’s teens? Are you a parent or a teacher? And what are you doing or plan to do to help teens of today? If you are Catholic, you might volunteer at a Catholic youth group. I bet you will be very impressed with the kids today. They are at least as great as they were in your youth.

Well,

I send quite a few to jail at times. I have however been known to help a few here and there. As far as Charity work with teens goes… I just got married 5 weeks ago so I have a new life to adjust to. I hope to have teenager of my own someday 🙂 . I would also like to point out again that not all teens are bad people.

Gosh! Did you miss your cup of coffee this morning? OP was making an observation, and asking if others had observed the same thing. I didn’t notice any allegations in anyone’s post. Speaking for my self, I said “many”, not ALL. And although there are many responsible and decent teenagers, I think it is pretty inarguable that pre-marital sex, teenage pregnancies and abortion statistics are a lot higher now than they were ten or fifteen years ago. With our pleasure seeking, sex saturated, gender confused culture, is it any wonder we have so many confused teenagers? You really don’t believe that there is rampant sexual promiscousness in the current teen culture?

Thank God for parent’s like you, that have taken their responsibility seriously, to teach the TRUTH to their children. We need more families like this. I also know many responsible teenagers, but that wasn’t the topic. If a topic was started about adulterous spouses, does that have to mean that that there is a hidden jab towards faithful spouses, or that they don’t exist at all?

Perhaps I missed something in the original post, but I think maybe you may have read something that wasn’t there?

God bless!

:hmmm: Again there seems to be some sort of miscommunication. Darrel asked for observations from others and wondered whether it was widespread or just in the NorthEast. I responded, saying I was from the NorthEast, not because I was implying that kids in the NorthEast are different or better or worse than anywhere else, but because IT IS WHERE I LIVE. If I was from the SouthWest my post would have said, I am from the SouthWest and , (blah, blah) I can see where it may have been misconstrued though.

Honestly though, why do you all have to get so hyper? Retract the claws …okay?🙂 It was an accident … I swear.

lol thank you Ana,

I never said all kids are bad. This was a heads up to all the good parents out there and a search for the truth about how teens are in the year 2005. Let me be very clear… I am not attacking your kid!

Location: Midwest Central Illinois to be specific.
Even in rural America those darned bracelets are a problem. Two years ago I bought my then 6th grade daughter a bunch of colored bracelets. She wore them to school and then would only wear a few of them. When I asked about it (keep in mind she goes to a Catholic School) she said the new girl in her class why is it always the new kid? made a comment about what each of the different colors meant very loudly and in front of the boys which embarassed my daughter. I went in and talked to the principal (a nun, if that makes a difference) about this girl as this was not the first time we had problems with this girl talking smut to the other kids. The principal was concerned about this and did talk to the mom of the girl, which ended up to be totally fruitless because mom sells sex toys out of her basement. Anyway, for a couple of months we didn’t hear anymore about it. Then my daughters friend in a local public school proudly was wearing her black (means oral sex) and red (sex) bracelets and laughing about boys trying to break them off of her (meaning that he is the recipient of these “favors”). I was appalled to say the least!!! My daughter stopped wearing the bracelets outside the house at all. Of course she wore them at home to see her brothers go totally nuts, that is what sisters do after all.

These bracelets have now been banned from all public and private schools in the area…

Ana–Yes, I did have my coffee yesterday morning and every morning. Thanks for asking and thanks for your concern! OP was doing more than “making an observation” IN MY OPINION!! I stated my opinion and I stand by it. I am entitled just as you are entitled to state an opinion, thank you very much. I further stand by my opinion that it serves little productive purpose to make global and sweeping negative “observations” about teenagers today. It tends to turn people negative on the group being criticized (in this case teens). It is not psychologically healthy behavior. I was trying to point out that if the OP is really concerned that he should do something PRODUCTIVE about it. Volunteering is a very positive response (as compared with just disparaging teens on a forum!)

I was the same way when I was in highschool from 1989-93. I went to a rather impoverished rural highschool, very small class size, heavily Protestant. So the kids should have known better, but I don’t think they were taught that it was wrong. My mom didn’t even know what oral sex was, so most parents probably didn’t talk about it with their teens. In sex ed. it was basically taught as a safe alternative to intercourse. People who had oral sex were still considered virgins.

Must be catching you on a cranky day. You certainly are entitled to your opinion, and more often then not, from what I have read they are usually substantial and well thought out. In this particular thread it is your TONE OF CONDEMNATION that is bothersome. Darrel or I for that matter didn’t do anything to deserve your hostility.

Doesn’t one have to first notice (or observe) a problem before deciding to join in the solution?

Now THAT is a tremendously good point!! But it was so wrapped up in snideful comments, it was hard to find.
