I can’t believe this person says we lie, and then lies to promote their nonexistent point!

I’ll bet space aliens told them all about us Catholics… well, I was waiting for them to say that, anyway. :whacky:

It would have been more believable.

At times like this, don’t forget to pray for these guys to open their hearts to Jesus and ALL His teachings.

Keep in mind that whenever there is a strong effort on the part of the Holy Spirit, there is an equally strong effort on the part of the diabolic to oppose the Holy Spirit.

There’s a good audio talk by the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen on “The Demonic Today” at the following website that you may enjoy:

alabamacatholicresources.com/archbishop_fulton_j_sheen.html

Gosh, I’m not even an apologist and I can shoot down every point in that video. This guy did a real hack job attack with no actual numbers or research or citations and then calls other liars?
You are right, we should be prayerful for these sorts of people…we cannot convince them but the Holy Spirit can.

I wouldn’t worry about a You-Tube video that offers the validation for their position that there was no such thing as Oral Tradition that “no one has produced a recording of it.” Anyone with two brain cells knows the Apostles didn’t have tape recorders. It just makes the creator of the video look pretty dumb if that’s the best they can offer.

As other posters have observed, all you get is his summation of the evidence. He, for example, “searched the writings of the early church fathers” and found that rather than support transubstantiation, it opposes the idea. But you don’t see him put the verses up, do you? Anyone really wonder why? 😉 😛

What I see is a video that says “All your answers are lies,” and nothing more. Just opinion, no facts to back it up.

Yeah, anyone with half a brain cell that watches that will know how little the person who made it knows about the Catholic Church, and their own faith as well.

But then again, it gets you thinking, perhaps they made it that way just to anger Catholics and get them riled up so they post ‘unChristian’ things on YouTube, thus furthering their ridiculous agenda…

…worse things have been attempted to ‘trap’ Catholics…

Hmmm… maybe I’m missing something, but I didn’t find that video particularly horrible or appalling. I’m absolutely certain that there are a lot of Catholic apologists who misrepresent statistics, misquote Church Fathers, or defend mistaken notions about their faith. Apologists are not infallible. This video seems to me more like a good-faith attempt at an intelligent response to actual problems, which we should try to correct in ourselves, than actual malice or deliberate distortion. It also seemed to me like the “recordings” of early oral tradition would be written records, not tape recordings… although we could argue that the writings of the Fathers provide such a record, the argument that there is no definitive written record of what constitutes “oral tradition” could still be made…

The video honestly didn’t anger me at all, I could care less exactly how many practicing Catholics there are in the world, or how many lies bad Catholics tell to gain converts, because those issues don’t detract one iota from the truth of the Catholic faith. If the video contains factual errors, they can be proven wrong, but that’s not really a good reason to assume malicious intentions on the part of the video maker.

Plus, if we always get riled up over everything like this, we’ll all go crazy pretty quickly :whacky:

Well, to each his own, I guess. But the things that they refuted in the video could easily be proved. I don’t view this as a ‘good faith’ attempt simply because of that fact.

The only thing I can think of if they really were attempting this ‘in good faith’ is that they were trying to do their research out of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. In which case, I suspect, you truly wouldn’t be able to prove the Catholicity of Early Church Fathers …

You don’t find it appalling that someone would cast all Catholic apologists into one pile labeled liars, distorters, and fabricators? I guess I differ greatly in viewpoint.

If, instead of quoting your words, I just made up some words I wanted you to say and responded to them, my guess is you wouldn’t approve of that. This video is the same thing. When a person says the writings of the early Church Fathers do not support transubstantiation, and is trying to pass that declaration off as the truth, I see a problem with that. Because it is a lie, which is a sin.

The whole video is a very amateurish effort to begin with, but that said it still forwards misinformation by passing off false statements as the truth. That is what I condemn about the whole thing, the lying. If anyone wants to make a video, great, but if they present their opinion as superior and it’s full of lies, I think it is worthwhile to set the record straight.

Hmmmmm. Interesting comment from someone who chose to call himself “IHateNietzsche” 🙂

hmm… you all make good points. It’s just that, in my experience, people are more often stupid than malicious. You don’t have to be an intellectual to make a youtube video. Also, I doubt many Protestants would agree that the work of the Church Fathers supports transubstantiation, so I really can’t blame the maker for his differing interpretation of the relevant texts, although I can strongly disagree with him. Since I don’t believe he knows what he’s talking about in the first place, I can’t accuse him of deliberately lying either - although I would agree that his ideas are untrue, the same could be said for any evangelical protestant…

Looking back, I was probably too strong in my wording when I wrote that. Hmmm… just note that because I think the poster “attempted” an intelligent response doesn’t mean I think he made one.

I guess I took his words as a sort of rhetorical device. “Catholic apologists” sounds a lot better than “Some Catholic apologists” or “Most Catholic apologists” when you’re trying to make a point. I would think it’s usually understood that not all of a group is meant in a case like this. I doubt that Pascal meant to bash all Jesuits without reserve in his “Provincial Letters”, or that when people say “Government is the problem” they mean to include the armed forces who defend us overseas.
If, instead of quoting your words, I just made up some words I wanted you to say and responded to them, my guess is you wouldn’t approve of that.
Certainly not. I h8 that… but it doesn’t happen to me very often.

Definitely. That’s why I don’t think the poster is malicious. If he knew that what he was saying was false, then it would be offensive. In my limited experience, though, people don’t passionately defend ideas they know to be false. This video is just… just silly. Not deliberate lies, imo, just wrong ideas.

(I always get asked about my screenname… lol)

Actually, I went to confession one time and the priest gave me some really bad, ridiculous advice, but I believed him about it… and during that session, he happened to mention that he enjoyed the philosophy of Nietzsche. So that’s how I got my name… 😃

If you have come across the right people, you know they will argue just for the sake of argument. They don’t want to listen to your responses and if they do, they ignore them completely. If they want to refute them, they’ll pick a superficial quote or past response they had heard that has no depth to it and parrot it to you. They really don’t care what you have to say, they just want to be heard, whether what they say is the truth or not.

It is those people that I see in this video. I do happen to see malicious intent here, only because of my own past experiences with others. I usually (though admittedly not always) can tell when a person is sincere or just plain argumentative. I have seen vitriolic responses, yet they were sincere in their beliefs. I have also seen vitriolic responses that could care less about their opponent. I have seen mild responses of both sides as well.

Sure, I may be wrong, but the entire presentation here seemed like it was put together hastily to prove a very weak point. And that does not seem genuine to me.

Well, there are catholic apologists here and if they wish to respond to this lousy video they do have the name recognition to do so and get attention for it. The owner of this site, Tim Staples, Dave Armstrong, and a bunch of others like James Akin, could do this with one hand tied behind their back and a blindfold on.

So, they have the opportunity to do so. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t.

It’s probably too ‘small potatoes’ for that. But the fact that I got this link from Facebook tells you that it has gotten around.

Oh. Attacks on the catholic church and her apologists are and ever could be small potatoes? Wow. Just wow. If I ever believe and become a catholic and ever know as much as they do, I would feel obligated to reply to such attacks. After all, isn’t that their career now?

You have to understand. There are tons and I mean TONS of people attacking the church. If they had to respond to each and every one of them, they’d be worn out. This particular person doesn’t have the ‘clout’ for most people to take them seriously. The apologists here such as the ones you mentioned aren’t going to go out and defend every single person who says ‘boo’ against the Catholic Church. As aggravating as this video was, there are much more prominent people to defend the faith against. This particular person should be defended by us, who are aspiring to be apologists, not the ‘big guns’ of apologetics.

That said, you also have to “pick your fights”. You have to recognize which fights are worth fighting and which ones will result in no gain. If you ever become a Catholic (and I hope you do) that would be great if you felt the calling to take on these people. I myself was going to comment, but sometimes I get too sarcastic and I felt that I was going to do that in my comment. If I want to be an apologist, I have to learn to control those sarcastic tendencies, as a sarcastic comment to that video by me would have gone a long way in promoting the author’s viewpoint and would have been absolutely no advantage to the Catholic Church.

You taught me something valuable and something that rings true to me.
You did it by admiting in a humble way that you wanted to do something, but you did not feel your approach would be best for serving the cause.

Thank you for being so humble, and honest. It taught me a lot about what it really means to go forth as a disciple if called to. It’s people like you that refrain from comments they know could lead people from christ, yet love him that show restraint which is a holy thing from what I read and know in my gut is right.

thank you for the lesson you taught me in understanding your way of living your faith.

If only I could restrain myself always. There have been posts here on the forums I wish I had never made, or at least worded in a more charitable way. I don’t always show restraint, but I do a lot more than one would think.

I don’t think I’d make a good apologist, but there are times when I just can’t help but defend my faith. 🙂

Such videos are meant for those who already hate Catholics. It isn’t going to convince any legitimate seeker of God who is on the fence regarding Catholicism. Unbiased people ordinarily see through such tactics, since one does not find it necessary to make such videos and spout lies if they feel confident about their position vis a vis the Church.
