Hosea chapter 13 verse 4. How can the jews be the chosen people when God admits He came from EGYPT?

Remember that the Lord established the covenant with Israel after leading them out of slavery in Egypt. (He had made a covenant with Abraham generations before, and promised to make his descendants more numerous than the stars, the Sinai covenant was with the people of Israel-who were the descendants of the sons of Jacob/Israel, who came down to Egypt to escape the famine in their land - remember Joseph and his coat?)

What they heck are you talking about?

Hosea 13:4 is recalling the covenant made with the Israelites when they came out of Egypt. Mount Sinai. Moses. Passover. Ten Commandments. Golden calf. Manna from heaven. 40 years. Promised land.

Sound familiar?

I think I got the verse wrong, the verse I am reffering to is Exodus 20:2

GOD said he is the LORD THY GOD FROM EGYPT!

Exodus 20:2 is where God delivers the Ten Commandments to the Israelites, and he begins, “I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery.”

What, exactly, is it you are trying to ask?

I’m not sure what verse now. I’m confused.

My original question was, How can the jews be the chosen people when God admits He came from EGYPT? The chosen people, the Jews, come from Israel don’t they? So why does God say they come from Egypt?

The Israelites were in Egypt for 400 years, eventually becoming slaves. So during the Exodus, they came out of Egypt and eventually to the Promised Land. That is what is being referred to, their exodus from Egypt.

The people who became the nation of Israel began as the family of Abraham.

Abraham’s son Isaac was the father of Jacob. Jacob had 12 sons, whose descendants became the 12 tribes of Israel. They migrated to Egypt during a famine in their own land. (Read the stories of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the bible and then the story of Joseph, son of Jacob, who is sold into slavery and becomes a steward to the pharoh in Egypt).

During their time in Egypt (400 years) the tribes go from being residents welcomed by the pharoh to being slaves. After 400 years, God hears their cry and selects Moses to lead them out of slavery, and out of Egypt.

These are basic stories of the bible. Time to study up.

It is always OK to ask a question even if one could research the answer him or herself.

The short reliable answers given on this blog go a long way to helping others, the questioner and other readers, to see the bigger picture than just a history story. Just as we wrote essays about books we read in school to get a better understanding.

Some personal thoughts: The Jews were slaves in Egypt. Through Moses, God wanted to free them. God’s chosen people. Pharoh refused to listen to God’s multiple requests through Moses, a man Pharoh knew and respected, perhaps because he did not believe in God and was not interested in learning whether there was a God he should believe in. Some folks are just set in their ways and ignore God’s call. The rich and powerful often reject their need for God. So the Passover happened, and in disgust, Pharoh set the Jews free, but STILL he changed his mind and gave chase. So the Red Sea parting happened. Lesson: Give it up: believe in God.

The Jews knew that it was God who rescued them - The Passover they celebrate to this very day and the Parting of the Red Sea. The God that lead them out of Egypt is powerful. The Jews then wandered 40 years being fed by manna from God. In those days, 40 years was life time so the Jews that were rescued from Egypt were not the Jews that entered the promised land. But the Jews, in one generartion, discounted God’s great gift of Freedom and complained. In their impatience, they did not trust in God in spite of what they knew God had done for them. God was not good enough to them. A stiffnecked people. Lesson: Once you accept God, stick with Him. Be grateful for what you have. You know there is worse you do not have. He will see you through the tough times.

In God’s good time, He kept His promised, out of His neverending LOVE, and the Jews entered the promised land of milk and honey. Lesson: Hang in there. Make the effort to remain faithful to God. God rewards in His own good time.

Human psychology is the same today as then. We are much better off trying our best to follow God. Whether we be rich and powerful or low on economic scale of life

I am sure there are other lessons to be taken from this part of the bible.
