Host and sitting

Two questions.

First, I went to mass at another parish where we know that the priest is very liberal (long story). The first thing I noticed was that the priest was sitting with the congregation in front during the reading. The second is that the priest was only distributing the blood and not the host and he let the others distribute the hosts. Are both of these abuses? Remember we are in Canada, not sure if this makes a difference.

Yes both are serious abuses.

Our priest typically distributes the blood also and lets others distribute the hosts. Why is this an abuse? He is a fairly conservative priest.

Yes, I would like something to back up both staments please.

For the priest to sit with the congregation is an abuse because it confuses the presidential role that he has. Could you imagine the President of the United States sitting with the people while he is introduced or while someone else is speaking?

As for giving the Precious Blood insted of the host – it’s not precisely an abuse but… The presider normally will give the Sacred Body of Christ while the deacon, another priest, or an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion distributes the precious blood. Again, this comes from his role as the one who is leading the assembly. He should not turn over his role to a secondary minister. This falls more properly under the discussion of liturgical principles rather than liturgical violations.
