Having originally come from Australia one of the traditions on Easter Good Friday was Hot Cross Buns…found in just about every store nationwide…I’ve lived here in the US for many years now but have only ever found one Publix store that had Hot Cross Buns…even they were nothing like traditional ones…I live in North Florida…I don’t know if it’s just local or not…are there any places in the US where it is traditional…I’ve never really heard anyone here mention them neither…I guess they’re just not an America wide traditional thing for Easter…they are delicious…smothered with butter.

You just reminded me that I have some in the freezer. ❄️

I don’t remember them being much of a thing when I was growing up, and certainly not in the last place I lived before leaving the US (Deep South, Bible Belt). Now that I live in Europe I can get them quite easily, but they’re not part of the local custom in France so I’m the only one I know who eats them.

Hot cross buns are so good for lunch cut in half and put in the toaster or put under the grill especially with butter and coffee

Since it’s an obligatory fast day, I would need something more substantial as one of my meals 😬 But I might have one (or two ) to break the fast at midnight.

Lol I was naughty and did coffee and a hot cross bun for lunch yesterday with miss 15

That seems like a really light lunch to me! I wouldn’t call it “naughty” 🙂

While fasting hubby and I try to get away with 1 or 2 meals we did cheese on crackers for dinner last night while the kids had sushi

Cheese and crackers is very light for a main meal. Kudos to you both—my current medical situation doesn’t allow me to eat so little. I can fast according to the norms of the Church, but not any more austere than that.

Is that your wedding photo in your avatar? If so, congrats! (Your profile still refers to your “fiancé” so I’m unsure)

Yes it’s my wedding picture. I really need to update my profile

even they were nothing like traditional ones
Just caught this on a re-read.

The few American hot cross buns I’ve eaten are nothing like the ones I buy now (made in UK), but they are traditional for the US. The UK HCBs are smaller, not as sweet and have a dough cross instead of the icing cross found on American HCBs. Each is traditional in the country where it’s found, though.

What are Australian HCBs like? (And NZ ones, @Brendea) 🙂

You can get them at bakeries, especially in Catholic areas.

Whether they are anything like the ones in Australia, I do not know. Here, they tend to be puffy sweet rolls with shiny brioche tops, containing raisins and with the cross on top made of white frosting. There are grocery store ones that will do if you’re hard up, but they are not as good as if you can find a bakery selling them.

I’m a little bummed that I forgot to buy any this week, but hopefully there will be some available next week. Good Friday is a bad day to be eating frosted pastries.

The ones in Australia have raisins and different spices…the cross on top…not sure how they do that probably score it somehow…I suspect…but don’t know for sure…that ones in the UK…New Zealand…maybe Europe are similar…the only ones I found here were filled with pieces of fruit with an icing cross on top…that one store was the only place I have found them here…North Florida is pretty much Bible Belt country also…that’s possibly why they are not a traditional thing here

…the only ones I found here were filled with pieces of fruit
Dried fruit or fresh fruit? I’ve never seen ones filled with fresh fruit. I’d be all over that 😎 All the HCBs I’ve had in the US had raisins mixed into the dough.

Nice with subtle spices majority of the crosses on our hot cross buns are made with a white dough we have some with raisins and some without which is good beacuse I hate raisins, we also have chocolate hot cross buns

Those look more like scones to me 🤔
Or English muffins.

I’ll stick with my nostalgia for the puffy USA raisin-and-frosting ones.
