Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) – A crisis hotline established after a woman committed suicide following an abortion was meant to help women like her. Now, the suicide prevention phone number is in the hands of a New York City agency that is using it to direct women in crisis pregnancy situations to abortion centers.
Reese Butler established the hotline after his wife Kristin, who suffered from bipolar and borderline personality disorders, committed suicide after she had an abortion.
Her physician presented abortion as the only decision in a complicated pregnancy. After tremendous grief following her death, Butler said he felt god leading him to establish the number for others in crisis.
Using money from insurance and the sale of their home, the National Catholic Register says Butler set up 1-800-SUICIDE to help others.
The Kristin Brooks Hope Center owned and operated the number, which now receives as many as 500,000 calls annually without any advertising.
However, the Register says Butler made the mistake of accepting a federal grant in 2001 to help promote the line, but the stipulation including giving ownership of the line to the Mental Health Association of New York City.
The Register indicates the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is about to decide whether the transfer of the line to the city government should be permanent…
The temporary reassignment of the line to the government is expected to expire in April and the FCC has a March meeting planned to determine the fate of the line.
Hartshorn told the newspaper her group is asking pro-life people to contact the FCC and urge it to allow Butler’s group to keep the hotline.
“We’re asking everyone who cares about life to call the FCC this week to protest the federal government’s unjust confiscation of this hotline,” Hartshorn said.

No shock here; government money is sticky, tricky business. He could start another hotline and keep the new one free of government control.

Do you have another source for this story?

The one you have given is all over the place and pulls stuff from no where. I wouldnt even call it a news article.

Eric:

I just read the article, and the only problem I saw was that the Life News seemed to be forced to indirectly alude to the National Catholic Register for most of the details instead of just printing the NCRegister article - The article wasn’t “all over the place” as you said, but limited by some sort of copywrite legality.

National Catholic Register definitely has the origninal article under subscription (it means I can’t quote it either) -

So what you are suggesting is that they plagurised another report?

That Life News site is just appauling, it seems that they are more interested in sensationalism than actual news (that Jamie-Lynn Spears article especally proves that).

There has to be another source for this story.

Eric:

Pagiarism is where someone simply reprints all or part of someone else’s work with giving them credit for the work. That’s what Jason Blair over at the New York Times did.

That’s definitely NOT what happened here, and definitely NOT what I’m suggesting. Life News Paraphrased the parts of the NCRegister Article and credited them as the original source.

As the NCRegister reporter interviewed Reese Butler & others assoc. with the story, NCRegister is the Original Source.

Do you have a problem with NCRegister being the Original Source for this story? Why did you accuse Life News of plagiarism when I didn’t? and, Why are you accusing Life News of “sensationalism” when the story has been confirmed from the Original Source?

Which is it that you find appalling, that a crises line founded to help women to find alternatives to Abortion has been hijacted by Pro-Abortion Aadvocates who now refer the girls to Planned Parenthood? Or, That NCRegister, Life News and possibly others have caught them and called it to our attention?

Personally, I find the first to be the most appalling, and am grateful for the second, because it gives me information I can act on.

Or, Is that what you find appalling, that someone such as mme now has me now has information I can act on?

gam197, strngrnrth, eric & anyone else reading:

This is what I’ve been able to add through a Google Search…

Most Articles & Blogs refered to the Life News Article (not surprising, given that the NCRegister article is under subscription):

You can add that the organization is called SAMHSA

Here’s another reason to stop funding Planned Parenthood:

Thursday, February 28, 2008 - Anniversary: Planned Parenthood patient bleeds to death after abortion
realchoice.blogspot.com/

I paid for the subscription to the NCRegister - They’re saying the same things the Life News Article does, and they apparently did interview Reese Butler. He seems to be playing down the Pro-Life part to the liberals who are helping him battle the government. But, That doesn’t mean the Pro-Life issue isn’t important to him.

Even our Lord said to be “Wise as serpents”.

Goodnight and God Bless.

Oh for goodness sake, they “paraphrased” it then.
As the NCRegister reporter interviewed Reese Butler & others assoc. with the story, NCRegister is the Original Source.
Do you have a problem with NCRegister being the Original Source for this story?
Where did this come from?
Why did you accuse Life News of plagiarism when I didn’t?
For starters, Im not you. I realise that sounds like a smug reply, but I can actually do things for myself and have independent thoughts from you.
and, Why are you accusing Life News of “sensationalism” when the story has been confirmed from the Original Source?
Why?

Because that is what they seem to do. I have not read the original story (although I did ask if there was another source for the story) or seen any confirmation from the source. I even gave an example of their sensationalism.
Which is it that you find appalling, that a crises line founded to help women to find alternatives to Abortion has been hijacted by Pro-Abortion Aadvocates who now refer the girls to Planned Parenthood?
Actually its a suicide hotline.
Or, That NCRegister, Life News and possibly others have caught them and called it to our attention?
I really dont know how to answer that.
Personally, I find the first to be the most appalling, and am grateful for the second, because it gives me information I can act on.
Or that either.
Or, Is that what you find appalling, that someone such as mme now has me now has information I can act on?
There was absolutly no need for that what so ever, that is straight out rude and offensive.

Where do you get off making such unjustified and offensive remarks?
Your Brother in Christ, Michael
How could you even type that after that last remark?

Thank you for listing all the sites.

Not all related sites were listed in that post. See a comment (below) from the director of the hotline cited in the article.
The article is just plain wrong. No one confirmed the bogus facts. Call 1-800suicide. Talk to any counselor. Abortion-related calls to the either of the national suicide provention hotlines are not simply referred on to NY or to any other pro-abortion site. Callers are treated with kindness and caring by counselors, often from their own communities.
Here is part of a statement by John Draper - Project Director of the
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline:
“As the Director of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, I can also clarify what Mr. Butler already knows: calls to the Lifeline’s 24-7, confidential toll-free numbers (800-273-TALK and
800-SUICIDE among them) are routed by area code to the nearest call center in the network. The Lifeline web site describes the routing process clearly(suicidepreventionlifeline.org/help/call_detail.aspx ). Therefore, a caller from Kansas, for example, is likely to be answered by the Lifeline center in Kansas. When a caller
reaches a local center, a trained helper listens to his/her problem, assesses the degree to which the caller could be at risk, and seeks to collaboratively engage the caller in finding the help that
he/she needs. Although local crisis centers may collect caller information, the Lifeline does not currently collect data on caller problems from its centers, so the number of Lifeline callers who
are pregnant, who have financial problems, or who are depressed, for example, is not known.
Member centers in this network report that helpers are trained to be non-judgmental and compassionate, and to be sensitive to the needs of the individual, regardless of cultural, spiritual,
political, socioeconomic or other differences between the helper and the caller.”

Please! Don’t believe everything you read without checking the fact.

So, what do we do to help this NOT happen? Is there a number to call… everything I find on this is from 2006.

Funny I should come across this post. I was just reading my copy of the NCR, March 3 edition and was struck by the article. I began immediately to address the issue on my latest blog entry and when trying to verify information I continually came across one obvious item: it does not appear that the woman had an abortion at all. Even the NCR article says:
Kristin Brooks, 28, suffered from bipolar and borderline personality disorders. When she became pregnant in 1998, her moods stabilized. She was so happy she was able to go off her medications.
Tragically, the unborn baby was diagnosed as having 20 serious birth defects. the doctor offered an immediate abortion as the only option.
I wish she’d had more time and more options presented, but that was not the case,” H. Reese Butler, Kristin’s husband, recalled.
They were sitting in a restaurant when Kristin felt the baby stop moving. She told her husband, “Our baby just died.”
On the websites attributed to Mr. Butler, it is stated that she committed suicide following delivering a stillborn baby and another says postpartum depression. I refuse to discuss this on my blog and anxiously await to see how NCR follows up with the story.

Peace

The 1-800 Suicide hotline counselors DO NOT automatically refer all callers who mention abortion to abortionists. It’s just not true.
Callers are treated with respect, taken seriously, and cared for as much as is humanly possible on the phone.
It’s easy to check - call & see. And go read the policy at the link I gave - it’s brand new 2008, not left over old “news” or rather “views” and slants from 2006. This story sounds so bad and so sick, because it’s just plain wrong!
Why would someone want to poison the sweet water in a well of his own creation? It’s just wrong.

Like I said Susan, or at least implied, I have a feeling something fishy is going on with the story. Can’t get much more pro-life than myself, but I won’t put the story on my blog until the full story is made clear and perhaps retractions are made. It is just not adding up. 🤷
