My little brother has not received the sacrament of the Eucharist yet so does he have to keep the hour fast before Mass?

No, you only keep the one hour fast If your going to be receiving Holy Communion.

The one hour fast is one hour before communion, not one hour before Mass although that is a good practice, for those receiving communion.

No, I’m pretty sure it’s an hour before Mass
You are mistaken.
Can. 919 §1. A person who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine.
NB the fast is only binding upon those receiving communion.

No, and neither do you, if you don’t receive the Eucharist. It’s not required to recieve at every Mass, btw.

I understand the church’s rationale behind the fast…but I also always remember that the apostles were eating a meal at the time the Eucharist was instituted…not fasting.

And at the last supper, 12 men were ordained to the epoispicate. Are we going to do that at every Mass too?

Let’s stop trying to make every Mass an exact representation of the last supper.

Jesus answered them, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. Mark 2:19-20

Waiting for Holy Communion is waiting for the Bridegroom…

Don’t get me wrong, I think the fast is fine. To willfully ignore the fast is a sin because the Church mandates it. I think it falls into the category of priestly celibacy, not doctrinal but steeped in tradition.

**We are to abstain from food and drink one hour before receiving Holy Communion. **Water is ok. Medicine is ok.

Even though the requirement is one hour prior to Holy Communion, I personally like to abtain from food and drink at least one hour prior to Sunday Mass. If I attend Mass during the week before I go to work, I’ll attend the early morning 7am Mass and fasting for me in that case starts the night prior when I go to bed.

According to the Canon Law of the Catholic Church #919:

919 (1) *A person who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before Holy Communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine.

***(2) ***A priest who celebrates the Most Holy Eucharist two or three times on the same day can take something before the second or third celebration even if there is less than one hour between them.

***(3) **The elderly, the infirm, and those who care for them can receive the Most Holy Eucharist even if they have eaten something within the preceding hour.

(By “elderly,” the Church means anyone 60 years of age and older.)
