“House” fans… stand up and be counted!
I have seen ALL the shows so far, and haven’t missed any of the Olympic speed skating either. 👍

Was that a call-girl House let in his apartment last night?! Yikes. Just when you think he couldn’t be any more of a bad boy…
The thing is, he is so likeable because of his failures and his struggles. You keep rooting for him. He is the ultimate sinner/saint - great prodigal son material.

I’m only an occasional viewer (I watch very little TV, in general) but have enjoyed this show in the past. Yes, that was a call girl, and I’m still pondering whether I’ll watch again.

Yes, it was a call girl.

I think the authors have created a realistic, honest, atheist character. He’s very unhappy.

The show has continued to slide downhill. Last season his contempt for pro-life views were made clear, and then this season he has been open about his relationship with protitutes (“once a week”) from the beginning. He has been involved in an extra-marital affair with his ex-wife (or encouraged her to to continue her affair with her now-husband, depending on your views of their marriage).

Meanwhile his best friend is involved in affair-after-affair and marriage-after-marriage.

Little miss “sweet & innocent” got completely stoned and slept with the annoying Aussie doctor dude.

There is no voice of morality on the show, and the only resounding message is “the ends justify the means”.

I fell asleep in the middle of it. Sorry. Normally, that doesn’t happen.

Oh, so you watch it for the over-arching moral content too? 😉
The writers do try to make him really unlikeable - I think that is the point and they are begging you to dislike him… But somehow - (maybe there is something wrong with me) you walk away feeling sorry for the miserable guy. I think that is the genius of the show.
Maybe it is the sinner in me that likes him, and hopes for his redemption.
Also, I didn’t come to the same conclusion as you on the pro-life issue. Abortion was far from being glamorized in the episode I think you are speaking of. In fact, I thought it was portrayed as a tragic.
Yes, there are complex and provocative themes - but just raising a provocative theme in fiction doesn’t glamorize or endorse immorality does it?

I personally think it’s one of the 2 or 3 best written shows on television and I don’t miss it if possible, although we were out last night and will have to go over to my daughter’s house to watch it on TiVo.

I don’t always agree with the positions, but I agree that his struggle and his defense mechanisms make him very easy for the hidden (or not so hidden) sinner in all of us to identify with.

House calls the father an idiot for not letting his wife get an abortion so he can get the transplant they think he needs. He also expressed surprise when little Dr. “Sweet & Innocent” expresses a mildly pro-life position, see that usually only people who believe in God have that thought.

I just discovered House this season. I like to watch b/c I think House is hysterically funny. I can do without the graphic/bloody pictures and, yes, morally, it probably won’t win any awards, but I like to watch it.

I want to get the DVD’s from previous season so I can see all of them.

Really? As formulaic as it is?

Scene 1:
Some person is a seemingly normal environment collapses. (Variation: Make a different person look sick, until the real sick person collapses).

Scene 2:
Some doctor tries to convince Dr. House to take the case.

Scene 3:
All four doctors in the office doing a differential diagnosis. They argue about what to do, and House says “Run test x”, irritating or surprising at least one of them.

Scene 4:
During test Y the patient goes into seizure or some sort of arrest.

Scene 5:
Repeat Scene 3.

Scene 6:
House encounters some other humorous and completely unrelated patient, usually in the clinic.

Scene 7:
Patient seems to be getting better, but then gets worse.

Scene 8:
Repeat Scene 3.

Scene 9:
Followup with the funny patient.

Scene 10:
After three wrong diagnosis and treatment attempts, this is the critical one. And if we get it wrong, he’s going to die. For real, this time.

Scene 11:
The last treatment is about to begin, when all of a sudden House has an epiphany! He changes the treatment at the last minute, and saves the day!

Scene 12:
Patient leaves hospital.

Well, apparently America likes formulaic. According to Neilsen ratings, Fox’s “American Idol” (also very formulaic) combined with “House” - killed everyone in their path as far as ratings last night. Including the Olympics. Formulaic works, Timidity! 😉

From Neilsen:

Among viewers aged 18 to 49, the audience group most prized by advertisers, “American Idol” had more than double NBC’s ratings in head-to-head competition against the Olympics.

Fox, a unit of News Corp. Ltd., even gave NBC a run for its money in the next hour of prime time, as the medical drama “House” ran nearly even with the Winter Games in total viewers --20 million for “House,” vs. 20.8 million for the Olympics – and trounced NBC in ratings among 18- to 49-year-olds.

For the night as a whole, Fox surpassed NBC’s prime-time Olympics coverage, including America’s first gold-medal victory in men’s alpine skiing in a decade – 23.1 million viewers to 18.5 million overall – and soundly beat NBC in the 18-49 category.

And here are the ratings for last week Feb 6. That show “House” in 6th place for the week. A.I. was number 1 and 3.

I think Hugh Laurie has gorgeous blue eyes!! (I always assure my dh they are not as blue as his)The wit is great! I interpreted his comment or laugh to the parents in last nights show re:16 yr old son sexual activity as mocking the parents for being so understanding and supportive of it. If I were half as witty as Dr House . . .

Hey MJE! Good to see you again! 👋

Well, apparently America likes formulaic.Undoubtedly, you are correct. And all shows follow a limited number of forulae, anyway. Just some are more obvious to me (Perry Mason was painfully so, as well.)

Probably shows I like a lot are equally so, but I don’t see it because I allow the story to get in the way.

I started watching House because I liked Hugh Laurie in Black Adder.

Last night (Monday 2/20) Fox aired a rerun of House I had never before seen. It ended with House playing some very lovely piano before finally struggling with a decision whether to succumb to his painkiller addiction or not. He spilled the contents of the prescription bottle across the piano top … and then they cued a song so wonderfully suited for that moment of indecision … “Desire” by Ryan Adams.

Ultimately, House pops the pill with noticeable shame.

It was a beautifully tragic ending to an episode that was very powerful. But here I go … I want to use it as an opportunity to be a bit of a Ryan Adams apologist if I can.

Ryan Adams is an extraordinary musician … not to mention brilliantly talented singer/songwriter, and his songs have meant a great deal to me over the years. Last year alone, he released three completely different albums. If you want to know anything about him or his music, feel free to e-mail me, write a private message, or heck, even post publicly right here!

Bottom line: I’d love to turn as many people on to his music as I possibly can, because he’s absolutely wonderful. If I can convince even one of you to buy an album or download a song, I’ll consider myself successful. 🙂

Well, consider yourself a success then. 🙂 I will hunt down a CD this week. I liked that music and thought 'hmmmm, I wonder who that is?"
I didn’t realize that was a rerun last night. I thought I’d seen all of them.

Wow, that was easy! 🙂

Cool. I’ll give you a quick breakdown of his albums … you’ll need it because every one of them boasts a completely unique sound. In respect of those who’d like to keep this thread “wholly House,” I’ll start a new thread with subject line: Ryan Adams. Anyone interested ought to go there. Hope I can make a few more “converts” outta ya. 😉

Maybe because it wasn’t a rerun. 🙂

The event that is causing his psychological pain just happened two episodes ago.

Sorry … my wife told me it was a rerun. She’s got a “better” memory than I thought, considering the episode was brander-than-new. 😉
