How “Catholic” were you before leaving the Catholic Church? Which one of these bests describes you?

I was not sarcastic. I haven’t seen Jesus criticize his own church. True he criticized the Pharisees, but did he criticize the ENTIRE faith? I don’t believe so. Just because leaders are corrupt at some points in time does not mean that they all are.

I think your just bitter because the church requires you to conform.
Bitter? No, as I am no longer in bondage. Obviously, Christ’s was a new way, otherwise, you would be Jewish or Pagan, yes?

I have received all of the sacraments except for marriage, studied in a Catholic university, daily liturgy and communion for many years, even after leaving the priesthood I still keep up on what’s happening in the world of theology.
I didn’t make it as far as you did, but I was much the same, up to four years of seminary.

Married in the Church, taught in a catholic school, taught CCD and RCIA, played guitar in the choir.

Until about 6 months ago I realized that I just didn’t believe. At all.

P.S. I love your sig line quote.

Thanks! Yes, I think that quote says a lot. Like you, one day I realized that it all meant nothing to me. I still go to Liturgy, but it is more for the music and the people, but it is a cultural thing. And you know, I’ve never been happier or at peace with myself.

And to those who say that we leave because of sex or disciplinary things…have you ever really talked to a former priest or religious? I think you would find that most of us have reached a point in our lives when we realize that all the things we were taught mean nothing to us any longer. And when that happens, the most honest thing we can do is leave.

Read Acts. The early christians had 2 services. One in the home (liturgy of the Eucharist ) and one in the Synagogues (Liturgy of the Word ) until they were expelled from the synagogues by the non-christian Jews after the destruction of the temple. Christ’s way built upon and perfected the old way. He did not do away with the old way.

What a depressing thread! Priests and nuns losing their Faith and a scary coach poster…

Just like reading the Bible showed me I should return and led others to leave their protestant groups.

Scary? No, joyous!

There are many, many people in the world that will never be able to accept Divinity as defined by Catholicism. For them, they have to find their own path. Rejoice that they can find the Divine, in whatever tradition or method suits them!

First off, as Peter Da Rock put it, “Read Acts. The early christians had 2 services. One in the home (liturgy of the Eucharist ) and one in the Synagogues (Liturgy of the Word ) until they were expelled from the synagogues by the non-christian Jews after the destruction of the temple. Second off, I am Catholic because I know in my heart that the Catholic Church is right. I will allow no other faiths into my life.

As for you no longer being in bondage, good for you! I’m not in bondage either. Who was your master when you weren’t in bondage?

I was baptized Catholic and raised in a devout RC family. I attended an excellent parochial grade school and received all of the sacraments and got A’s (E’s) in catechism. I attended weekly Mass and sometimes attended daily Mass. I went to novena and retreats. I was a regular participant in Processions. I was married in the Catholic Church. I read the Bible cover to cover along with all of the footnotes interpreting passages according to the Catholic Church.

One day it came to me that I no longer believed in the RCC. During this whole time I studied other Christian religions. I was very attracted to the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Eventually I realized that I was an agnostic.

After years and studying many religions, I no longer believed in God. Five years ago, I became a Theravada Buddhist. I found a spiritual home.

My family is still very devout and although no one mentions it, I am sure they pray that I will return to the RCC. I don’t discuss religion with them because I don’t want to do anything to undermine their faith in any way. When interacting with my nieces and nephews, I fully support the teachings of the Church to them. Only the adults in my family know that I am Buddhist.

Personal attacks usually mean you cant refute what I have posted. It is sad the truth scares you so, but it is not surprising.

Peter’s logic is circular. As far as your knowing in your heart, I am glad for you. However, you need to extend the same courtesy to those who dont agree with you.

Sorry coach - I just saw your post. The Truth does not scare me for sure, but I’m sincerely sorry if my post sounded like a personal attack. I was just being honest.

AS am I.

I wonder if the OP can explain why he put the word “Catholic” in quotes in the subject line? I really am curious.

Is it to say that someone who has left the church was never really catholic to begin with?

Scary? No, joyous!

Catholics can never rejoice that people abandon the most secure path to salvation. Only Catholics and the Orthodox have the sacraments. I shudder to think of how slim my chances of salvation would be without the sacraments.

We’re scared b/c we fear for these peoples’ imoortal souls.

God bless

I sincerely wish all people were devout Theravada Buddhists. Fear could be overcome, war could stop, and suffering could be reduced.

As a former Catholic, I am saddened by the fear and suffering I see among posters on this board. Never the less, I realize that my path is not the path for everyone.

I agree 100%. This realization has been like a ton of bricks that has been slowly dropped on my head - if that makes sense. I’m so grateful to have the sacraments and I pray for all fallen away Catholics to see what they’ve walked away from and are choosing to miss out on.

I walked away from the faith in a undramatic way, mainly by chasing after the pleasures of the world. It’s only by the grace of God which I believe I receive through the sacraments that I can resist these temptations. Without the sacraments, I’m toast.

There is no such thing as a secure path to salvation.
Only Catholics and the Orthodox have the sacraments.
Nope. Most denominations have baptism and marriage; many have holy orders.
We’re scared b/c we fear for these peoples’ imortal souls.
I appreciate it, but there’s only two people that should be concerned with my soul. Me and my wife.
God bless
Thanks! 😃
