I haven’t really heard much about this topic, probably because plural marriages are fairly uncommon. But supposing I were say a Muslim, and married a second wife in my home country of Yemen.

How does American law treat my marriages when I come to visit the US. Does it matter whether I’m an American citizen or not?

Those who practice it have cause to keep it secret: under immigration law, polygamy is grounds for exclusion from the United States.

Here’s how a man gets around the laws: He marries one woman under civil law, and then marries one, two or three others in religious ceremonies that are not recognized by the state. In other cases, men marry women in both America and abroad.
