The one reason I keep going back to the Jerusalem/New Jerusalem Bible is that the RSV-CE/2CE does not have substantive foot notes. Both the RSV-CE and -2CE do have cross-references, but nothing to the level of the JB/NJB. Do not get the RSV-CE readers edition, as there are no notes or cross-refs. The RSV-2CE is pretty decent as far as layout goes, and it does have decent cross-refs…but if you are like me and need or want everything in a one volume bible then your only choice IMO is either the JB or NJB, as they are superior in terms of notes, cross-refs and scholarly materials…unless you are okay with having several volumes in which case you would want to find yourself a pile of money and buy the Navarre RSV study bible series. I simultaneously use the NJB with the RSV-2CE, particularly if there are any strange renderings in the NJB that I want to check on.

No and no. There just aren’t enough of them to be informative, overall. The NT is much denser with cross-references than the OT. If you want a reasonable number of cross-references in the NT and don’t care much about having them in the OT, save for a few key areas like Isaiah 53, then you’ll be fine.
If you are interested in footnotes, without question get a different version.
More footnotes, however, will compromise how well the bible holds, etc. As it is, the maroon paper one I have handles well. So if you just want to read it, sitting in a armchair, it is good. It has sufficient headers to aid in finding passages and the pages are clean/pleasant. It seems designed for armchair use.

The cross-references are fine in the RSV-2CE, it has the same amount of limited notes as does the RSV-CE. It does however have maps and chapter headings, and it is layed out very nicely. It may not have the notes of the JB/NJB, but to me, it is a far better translation. I am still waiting on Ignatius Press to come out with a RSV-2CE Study Bible. I E-mailed Ignatius Press about a year ago, and they told me it was a couple of years out.Are there a lot of them? And are they informative?
