Hi everyone, one of my friends is a huge “end time” person, always posting stuff on social media that is supposed proof we are in the end times. I went to school with him and he used to be catholic but is protestent now.Anyway he posts stuff about the signs we see, such as earthquakes, increase of sin, war etc, etc and to be honest the whole thing gives me anxiety. We live in an area where we are prone to earthquakes and yesterday he posted an article about how we are going to be in a big one soon because God is angry. I have an infant right now that is extremely dependent on me and my husband works an hour and half away and my parents are in a totally different part of the state. I feel alone and sometimes I have panic attacks when I see him posting these things. I just can’t imagine going through something so huge and sometimes I will totally shut down or break down and cry when I imagine my little daughter dying and lately it is all I can think about even when I don’t see my friend’s post. I just feel so alone and all I do is worry about my family. But then I see people saying that Jesus told us not worry and to trust in God, but how are we supposed to do that if we are also supposed to look for signs? Sometimes at night I will try to pray and I’ll just stop and wonder if God is even listening.😊

Scripture, and the promises it brings is not doom and gloom, but good news!

It just needs to be put into perspective.

The Day of the Lord will come, and there is nothing we can do to stop it, but the end is a renewal.

Here are two readings to keep in mind, and that perhaps will bring you comfort:

Start with this reading, and see the hope rather than the fear we should have when the Lord not only destroys, but renews, the earth:

**Isaiah 65:17-25 **“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice for ever
in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant that lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the child shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain, or bear children for calamity; for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the LORD, and their children with them. Before they call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall eat straw like the ox; and dust shall be the serpent’s food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain, says the LORD.”

And now consider this reading to give you cause to rejoice rather than fear, and to feel the peace that the Lord will bring.

Philippians 4:4-7 *Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Peace and all good!

First, i myself wonder about all the “signs” that protestants like to scare people with but when i think back historically, things are actually about the same as they have always been, we just have more knowledge about whats going on in the world around us with computers, TV, satellites, ect…

Second, Christs return and the Catholic message is about hope, not tribulations to worry through.

Third, quit reading posts like that if they upset you, block, unfollow, unfriend whatever you must do to stop the constant anxiety and worry.

The bible warns of this EXACT thing, that people will say things are as they have always been, so no need to worry…

**2 Peter 3:3-4

Knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.

You are right about one thing, things like this have happened all thru out history, but never been a time when so many have happened or are happening all at one time, that is the difference.

I have no doubts we are in the end times, and while I do consider myself to be a faithful servant of God, thinking about the day when Jesus returns is still kind of frightening, some of the things the bible says will happen are definitely going to be very scary to us who are all used to living in a world we understand, no matter if you are the most devout person or not.

No offense but I wasn’t asking if we were living in the end times or what your take was, I was asking how we are supposed to look for signs but not be scared or worry as Jesus instructed

I can honestly tell you that I can feel exactly what you’re feeling. “Worry but don’t worry”. On this one we really have to try harder, but honestly, I don’t think there is an easy way. All I can think of is when my mom used to take me to the doctor to get shots against polio, chicken pox and others. She used to tell me that it was for my own well being, so I wouldn’t get those terrible diseases, but MAN, those shots were painful and I had to go through it and at the end those shot were worth it! Have faith in the Lord and ask Him for guidance.

I sometimes have anxiety attacks about the “end times” as well. But I have to remember that Christ’s coming will be something awesome to see. Please, keep praying that your soul will be in a state of grace, read your bible and attend Mass regularly. If this stuff still bothers you, speak with your priest. The end times, as awful as they sound, might not meet up with the expectations of the “alarmists.”

How old is your infant? Have you discussed these feelings with your priest and possible with your physician? Some of the statements above (feeling alone, break down, cry, worry about your family, if God is even listening) may be a something that your priest can talk you through or (no offense) may be a sign of post-partum depression -you might talk with your physician as well. I will pray for you and your anxiety, Peace be with you. Dee

My daughter is two weeks old on Saturday. I have not sought help because I know I will sound crazy. I know I am definitely feeling a little crazy, normal people don’t think about this stuff as often as I do and worry and fret.

Congratulations on the birth of your daughter

You do not sound crazy. You sound like someone who needs help. What would be crazy is needing help but not seeking it.

As to your original question, try not to view it as looking for signs but being receptive to signs you may notice. God has given me plenty to do. I can’t accomplish all that and constantly search for signs as well, but I do try to be open to potential signs that I see in the course of attending to my duties. Not just end-times signs, but all kinds of signs for all kinds of things. Overthinking what might be a sign isn’t healthy. If you notice something, pray to God for the clarity to understand it for what it is and then be open to what He may reveal to you. Worrying about things that haven’t happened and show no signs of happening in the short run is a waste of time and energy…as is reading posts on social media that upset you acutely.

If I could give you a hug, I would. Be assured of my prayers for you and your family. :signofcross: God bless!

Oh, Im sorry, my mistake.

That is a good question, my guess is God would tell us to rely on our faith, but thats tough, especially when we read some of the descriptions of what will happen on the day he returns, when we realize we are getting close to that actually happening, its very scary to think about, Ive always been kind of frightened by verse that says ‘the sky will roll up like a scroll’…I could not imagine walking outside and watching such a thing take place!!!

Aw. He is ALWAYS listening, but many times we cannot tell.

Ellam I had these same concerns when my son was very young and there were plenty of people saying the same thing your friend says - more even, because Y2K was on the way and it looked like that was going to be used to usher in the end times chaos. How are you supposed to “be not anxious” when you are a Mom? But Jesus tells us again and again, and that is His will. So if your friend makes you anxious, ought you not cut him out of your circle (starting with Facebook account) in order not to disobey what God asks of you? I mean, if this friend cannot talk to you of the end times in some way that it does not worry you, then he must be doing it ALL WRONG. And what about *his *infant? Oh - that’s right, he probably doesn’t have one, or any kids either, am I right?

There are lots of end-times modern day prophets who WILL be happy to give you lots and lots and lots of instructions on how to prepare. Generally not to swindle you, either - they are genuinely concerned. Yet Jesus tells us not to be anxious. Its His voice you listen to when voices conflict.

Well my son is 19 now and the tribulation did not yet come. God is merciful. Yes, there are lots of signs of the end times and we don’t know the day or the hour, or probably even the year, only that they are coming. But how fast? Who can know? God in His mercy may be taking His time, to save as many as possible.

One thing I realized worrying about how I would keep my son alive in a world without food and with civil unrest is that even if I stockpiled the entire house with food, even if I could create secret niches in my house (but I could not), how could you eat without feeding your starving neighbors. And then theirs, and then theirs. You supply for your little family could be gone in a week just with sharing. Then there is stealing - in the chaos, people woudl steal your cache. Some say go make a hideout in the country, but a gang could come and take over and kick you out. So people explained to me that in these cases you would have to count on God for multiplication of food. That I can believe. God says trust Him, and in some cases this would be the only way He could provide.

God wants us to be not anxious, and to trust Him. So the best thing you can do to prepare is to practice trusting Him, and practice being not-anxious in situations a person would naturally be anxious. To grow in this way, you have access to the gold mine - the Sacraments of the Church - the ordinary way God pours out supernatural graces so that we can grow in grace. Bottom line is that is really all you need to do. To be in a state of grace, and to have quiet time with the Lord - that is key. Doing this you will learn to hear His voice, and you can trust Him to make it clear if you should do something other. The directions of God are accompanied by peace. The directions of “other” are accompanied by anxiety.

A little piece of Catholic gold I discovered is the ministry Directions for Our Times, and that link is to all the volumes and booklets (maybe start with one of the little booklets to get the feel of these works). On the web you can see the credentials - Anne submits all her work to her local bishop who approves their publication (and has assigned a priest to her ministry) and all the works are submitted to the Vatican for review. So its all proper form, and nothing has been found contrary to our faith or doctrine. And the end times are talked about, though not prevailingly, the emphasis being instead the return of Christ the King, and the aspects of that - the best preparation being the focus on our daily walk today. Its a balanced view that will not make you anxious, even in the few times its mentioned that the coming difficult times are ahead - Our Lord knows how to speak of such things without making us anxious, but instead, reassured.

I think it woudl be wise to tell your friend that this is not a subject you want to discuss, because you get anxious when he does, and that is not good at all for the Mom of a small infant. And its not good because Jesus has made it clear He does not want you to be anxious so, it interferes with God’s will for you.

I think Our Lord not wanting us to be anxious has a lot to do with our inability to hear Gods small voice inside when we are anxious. Its in peace that we hear Him, and He thirsts to be with us, and not be standing by yet shut out by our anxiety.

Also, if we ARE in the End Times, God chose YOU to be in THESE times now, and He has a plan for you. He has equipped you for the mission.

I definitely agree with this, what makes me curious is how so many people can honestly deny the times we are living in, but claim to be very devout christians who know their bible…How can they miss all the warnings Jesus gave us?

Jesus did this for a reason, while its true we cannot know the day or hour, its important to remember he gave us all those warnings, so people can recognize when he is ‘at the door’, if he truly wanted none of us to have the slightest clue when his return would come, he would not have given us any warnings to watch for.

Perhaps you can start a separate thread on this topic and we may get some more sage advice. We dont want to derail our OP’s intent

:hmmm:

This is an excellent question.

First of all, it is good that you are trying to remain open to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Second, this friend of yours is not the voice of God on earth. You don’t have to listen to or read another word he says – for the rest of your life – and God would still be able to speak to you and lead you throughout your life 👍

Personally, as a single mom, worry is a way of life :sad_yes: It just comes with the territory. But after twelve years of practice living in faith as a mom, I can say it gets easier.

Finally, with regard to looking for signs, I don’t remember Our Lord telling us we need to spend huge chunks of our life seeking such signs. Love. Service. Prayer.

Personally, I never give the end of the world a single thought! Rather, I remember that any day could be my last, and I work to live in faith and the love and service of Christ THIS day! That’s how to grow in surrender and faith.

Have courage, dear sister in Christ. The early weeks of motherhood are exhausting, confusing, concerning – and sleep deprivation makes us emotional and sometimes focused on things that wouldn’t normally bother us.

God bless you!

I think a lot of it is denial, a normal human emotion. Those of us not in denial for whatever reason* will be more mentally (and hopefully spiritually!) prepared when the signs get harder to ignore so we can be a help to those who are just rudely awakened.

(and in some cases, like the case of a young Mom, it could be their Guardian Angel whispering, "Don’t fret about this now. You have an important job, right here, right now. I’ll *let you know when you need to act.")
