I’m sure anyone here who’s Canadian knows by now that NDP Leader Jack Layton died this morning. He was very pro-abortion, pro-same-sex “marriage” and supported funding for contraception in under developing countries. That said, I don’t believe he was Catholic.

I’m not weeping tears of sorrow, nor am I rejoicing in his death, but I have prayed for his soul.

My friends and family members think he’s the bee’s knees (my mom was furious with me when I didn’t vote for him) and react to me as being heartless for not being sorrowful about his death. When I remind them about his political stances, that they’re grave crimes against nature that as Catholics we’re not to support such crimes against morality and humanity, and that I’m more concerned about his immortal soul, they lash at out at me for even suggesting that his soul might be in danger.

So, I’m left puzzled by how am I supposed to react to his death?

As you said, Pray for his soul.

You can express sorrow at his death, as I feel. Mostly over a life wasted in false pursuits instead of in ways that could have brought TRUE benefit to the people of Canada.

I think most people who are pro-choice are only so because they are ignorant. You can be pro-choice and be a decent person and be a scumbag who is pro-life, so for the most part, when someone pro-choice dies, I feel the same way I do if they were pro-life.

That’s true also. :sad_yes:

God bless :byzsoc:

We should be happy that such pro-abortion advocates have ceased their pro-abortion activities.

And pray for their souls.

So, it’s okay to be “happy” that pro-aboriton advovates have ceased doing what they’re doing, but when I posted that I was “Happy” Osama boy is dead, people screamed at me…at least , through the computer. ;)

I agree on the “pray for their souls” thing.

Not on topic of the subject of this post. But I think that it would have been better if we could’ve caught Osama alive. Then we could’ve found out from him what his buddies are up to.

Proverbs 24:17-18. Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and when they stumble, do not let your heart exult, lest the LORD see it, be displeased with you,
and withdraw his wrath from your enemy.

I have felt somewhat guilty on a few occasions when I learned that an enemy finally received his come-uppins for all the harm and terror he caused. It is hard not to feel some elation of heart and thanksgiving to God for the end of the evil. I’m not sure whether this proverb should be taken literally, yet I don’t know of any other scriptures that address this. Maybe the sense is to rejoice that the reign of evil was ended, while not passing judgment on the soul of the evildoer?

Yes, but when evil doesn’t succeed it’s okay to be happy.

Same way you would react to anyone else who has died - were not here to judge one another - May Jack rest in peace and may his family find peace.
There is a real Self-righteous group on this board - remember in our faith any good we have done is by Grace not by our own hand - its called humility. Some will say different though.

The difference is in being happy the the sins have ceased, rather than that a human being is dead. Perhaps that didn’t come through clearly in the other thread… 🤷
