In order for an atheist to go to heaven the person must first gain faith and then be baptized.

Baltimore Catechism:
9. Is faith necessary to salvation ?
Faith is necessary for salvation.
(“He that believeth not shall be condemned” Mark 16:16)
  1. Why is baptism the most holy sacrament ?
  2. Because without baptism no one can be saved.
(“Unless man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God” John 3:5)
Baptism of desire = Love of God, contrition of sin, and desire to receive baptism.
Baptism of blood = martyrdom for the sake of V=Christ before baptism can be received.
Council of Trent:
Canon 5. If anyone says that baptism is optional, that is, not necessary for salvation, let him be anathema.

But wouldn’t the person cease being an atheist once he or she gained faith?

Well, God judges us on what we know. If an Atheist doesn’t know about these things then he is invincibly ignorant.

Here is more on this: catholic.com/video/does-god-judge-us-on-what-we-know

God Bless!

Well, one day we’ll find out for sure.

And if you are saying that God is incapable of letting atheists into heaven then you might be in for a surprise.

I think it MIGHT be possible for God to provided mercy to non believers who did not forsake God.

Meaning, I think there is a difference between someone who is reared by their parents to be atheists vs. someone who was raised Catholic (for example) and then renounced God to become an atheist. Also, I think there is a major difference between a “respectable atheist” and one who constantly defiles God.

Basicly, God can do what ever God wants to do. If Jesus decides to forgive a respectful atheist after a long time of purgatory.

NOTE: I’m not indending to say anything against the teaching of the Church. Just that God can do whatever God wants to do. All we can do as believers is continue to believe and tlive a life of good example, reflecting Jesus’ teachings.

God Bless.

Pretty right on.

The biggest thing to learn on this issue is the following.

There is ONE way revealed by God for salvation. That is to repent and be baptized and live the gospel. The church holds and shares this truth that we can have assurance of because God HAS REVEALED it to us.

Any other talk of salvation of non Christians is speculative. It is saying we acknowledge God can do it and we acknowledge Gods perfect justice. So we can HOPE for him to act in other ways than revealed.

Put this way you can better understand the string call to missions by Jesus and the Church.

What then, do you do with the scriptures that say…

Blest are they who show mercy; mercy shall be theirs. Matt 5:7

and The Last Judgement Matt 25:31

Come. You have my Father’s blessing! Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you game me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me… I assure you, as often as you did it for one of my least brothers, you did it for me.

Matt 7

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Atheists are not invincibly ignorant. They can be saved, but if Baptism and belief are required for salvation it’s yet another mystery to me how they will go to heaven… but still we pray for their conversion.

Not knowing something does not automatically equate to invincible ignorance.
As we read in section 1793 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: “If the ignorance is invincible, or the moral subject is not responsible for his erroneous judgment, the evil committed by the person cannot be imputed to him. It remains no less an evil, a privation, a disorder. One must therefore, work to correct the errors of moral conscience.”

But wouldn’t the person cease being an atheist once he or she gained faith?
Any person who can’t stand being around God’s people here on earth for sure wouldn’t be comfortable in heaven! They would be begging God to get them out of there! ( My humble opinion.🤷)

Who is to know the mind of God? Apart from some Jesuits of course!
These posts remind me of protestants bickering at the front door at the visit of a SD Adventist. Biblical snippet sniping at dawn. May the better born again win.

No, we must just pray for the atheist who hopefully is in ignorance and leave his soul as I leave mine continually to the mercy of Our Lord. Peace to you all.

I must disagree.

Of course we must pray for them but we must also obey Christ to share the good news. We live our faith and demonstrate it and we engage atheists in discussion. No one here is claiming “I’m saved and your not” they are presenting what Christ and the church says.

We should not rely on a possible hope.

It is fine to hope for their salvation but you must go and tell the nation baptizing them and working on conversion of souls!

The Catechism also says that the invincibly ignorant, if offerred baptism would receive it. I know of no atheists who would do such a thing.

(People always ignore this part  )

1260 "Since Christ died for all, and since all men are in fact called to one and the same destiny, which is divine, we must hold that the Holy Spirit offers to all the possibility of being made partakers, in a way known to God, of the Paschal mystery."63 Every man who is ignorant of the Gospel of Christ and of his Church, but seeks the truth and does the will of God in accordance with his understanding of it, can be saved. It may be supposed that such persons would have desired Baptism explicitly if they had known its necessity.

To say that ignorance in invincible almost sounds like making the claim that God is not omnipotent.

I have seen too many people use the argument and apply it to simple stubbornness, pride, or just a reaction and response to rejection.

I trust what Jesus said.

The problem is that meeting the requirement of invincible is practically impossible in today’s world. Invincible means that you have never heard about it.which pretty much disqualifies the vast majority of the population.

Challenging the CCC and the acknowledged St John Paul II is hardly sensible.

“The universality of salvation means that it is granted not only to those who explicitly believe in Christ and have entered the Church. Since salvation is offered to all, it must be made concretely available to all. But it is clear that today, as in the past, many people do not have an opportunity to come to know or accept the gospel revelation or to enter the Church. The social and cultural conditions in which they live do not permit this, and frequently they have been brought up in other religious traditions. For such people salvation in Christ is accessible by virtue of a grace which, while having a mysterious relationship to the Church, does not make them formally part of the Church but enlightens them in a way which is accommodated to their spiritual and material situation. This grace comes from Christ; it is the result of His Sacrifice and is communicated by the Holy Spirit. It enables each person to attain salvation through his or her free cooperation.” (Bl John Paul II, Redemptoris Missio, 1990, 10).

Thus, just as without Christ there is no salvation, so without the Church there is no salvation. Catechism of the Catholic Church # 846 - # 848]. The Catholic Church, regardless of whether or not a person knows of its divine origin and founding, is the body through which ALL salvation comes to anyone whom God deems worthy to receive it.

Further, “Work out your own salvation in fear and trembling.” (Phil 2:12).
We have a duty, and should strive, to offer the fullness of truth to all who seek it so that they may grow in grace and be able to offer it to others also.
