How bad does the weather need to be to miss mass?

I made a crack to that effect last winter at a city council meeting…every councilmember gets a chance to make a general comment before closing the meeting.

I said something like “I hope everyone is enjoying the global warming we’re having this week”…from out in the crowd, a well known tree hugger muttered (out loud) “smart A**”

Fire up another pot of coffee and stay inside and warm

When I can’t go to Mass I ‘attend’ it on TV.:byzsoc:

I put a chair in front of the TV set, lit a candle and maybe even burn an incense stick.
I pray, follow the Readings on my Missal, I stand up, sit, kneel, etc. the same as if I were at Church. With spiritual Communion included.

Maybe you and your family can do the same if the weather does not improve.

Wow I missed it! I was supposed to be winter camping up at Punderson SP this weekend, with a little X-country sking for a couple of days. Was going to head up Thursday and come back Monday. My cousin lives in Conneaut, talked with him yesterday. He said that they were without power and had ICE and were expecting 14 -20 inches of snow today.

You got lucky, lol… I can’t imagine trying to travel in this mess.

DH’s work closed up early today because it was so bad. He said most of the cars were stuck in the road because the snow was just too deep. Then when he got home he had to leave again and go get his brother from work because his car would’t go anywhere. It is NASTY out there! When I look out the front window, I can’t see my van, all I see is a big fat white lump in the driveway. I don’t know when I’m ever going to get it out. Doesn’t look like it’ll warm up anytime soon to melt the snow and it looks to deep to shovel.

Oh man, I want to move south!

Oh man, I want to move south!

Why? We got almost ten inches over three days in North Texas this week ! Nobody around here has plows or anything…talk about mayhem!

I could take this once in awhile, but after my 31 years, it’s gotten really, really OLD! It is so frustrating that we’ve had nasty cold/snow/ice/cold/snow/storms for the past four months now and here we are in MARCH and bang (especially after our spring teaser last week of 60-70 degree weather!)! Had enough.

It can’t snow in Texas. Texas is nothing but sand according to every movie I have ever seen that is set there. So, that is how I choose to picture it.

I saw on the news that even Brandywine Ski Resort closed due to the weather.

Usually whenever I make a global warming joke I just get blank stares. A few times I have gotten yelled at by angry hippies.

Before that I had thought that vegetarians were the only people in the world who could not take a joke.

I live out in Upstate NY, and well, there are definitely times where it is near suicide to drive in our weather. I’ve been in situations where I’ve debated going to Mass on Saturday when it looks really bad, vs going tomorrow when I know it will be worse. But I think that if you start to question whether or not it’s safe to drive, then that’s a good sign that you might not want to drive in it. God doesn’t hold us accountable for things we can’t control!

KDKA radio reports about a dozen churches cancelling CCD classes for tomorrow, but no masses cancelled yet.

Not likely either, masses are rarely cancelled as geographic parishes make it so that many if not most of the parishioners are close to the church.

I’m probably just gonna sound like a broken record here(I haven’t read the whole thread, you see), but it depends on your car, your church and your level of comfort with driving in rather dangerous conditions. If you are used to this sort of thing and have an all wheel drive car, then you might be able to make it alright, but if you have a ten year old heap and live somewhere where you aren’t used to winter driving, or aren’t used to quite this scope of winter driving, then don’t worry about it. Nobody wants to hear about someone sliding into a ditch on their way to Mass because they were too headstrong to admit that it wasn’t a smart idea to try.

It depends on the priest as well. In my area, quite a lot of parishioners live very close to the church, but the pastor lives thirty miles south due to the fact that Father had a brother with Alzheimer’s and because he is frequently reassigned and usually within that city, he bought his own residence both for his own convenience and so as to not confuse his brother.

I guess this is a “personal” thing; but for me if it is raining I will not go! i am scared to death to be in a car or drive in the rain. I was once in a accident in the rain and now I will not get into a car in that kind of weather. I feel God knows what is in my heart so I am in the clear.

I live in Toronto, and I think we’re getting the same system that’s come up through Ohio. Tres nasty.

Hold your horses, there, pardner!

Although Mexican-Americans make up a significant number in our Church, there are also some Germans, Poles, French and Italian Catholics in the beautiful Republic of Texas!!! In fact, the Germans founded New Braunfels (the home of Schlitterbahn Water Park), the Poles founded Panna Maria (visited by Pope John Paul II in 1987) and the French founded Castroville, just south of San Antonio. The Italians built a beautiful church, Santo Fracesco di Paoloa, in downtown San Antonio and the Irish built St. Mary’s Catholic Church just a few blocks away. The Germans also built St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, which is bordered by the River Center, right along the famous San Antonio River Walk. Of course, there are also the Spanish treasures of San Fernando and the Missions.

It rarely snows in deep South Texas. The last time we had snow was Christmas Eve 2004. The only real severe weather we get comes in the form of a tornado (and we rarely get that down here). Of course, there are also the rare bouts with flooding, but, that only happens if a hurricane is heading westward from the Gulf of Mexico.

My advice is (and I’m surprised none of the Yankees from up yonder brought this up) if the National Weather Service has issued a Severe Winter Storm Warning, then, stay home. I took a year of meteorology at UT and learned about the dangers of driving in deteriorating weather conditions.
