How bad is it to drink black coffee before mass?

Yes, but I think three hours is more fitting.
I don’t have a problem with fasting before the 6:30 a.m. Daily Mass but even not eating before the Sunday 8:30 a.m. Mass makes me very irritable and groggy. If the rules were changed to mandating a 3 hour fast or longer I would comply but I would not be “nice” at Mass. Before you decide that 3 hours is more fitting just remember the increased number of people who aren’t “nice” at Mass. I assume that is one of the reasons the rules were changed.😉

Really? If Holy Mother Church would decide to go back to the old fasting requirments, you know you would not be nice at Mass then?
…We fast to prepare ourselves both spiritually and physically to receive the Lord. …

 If it was a late Sunday morning Mass and I followed the fast, yes I would be irritable and groggy. There wouldn’t be a thing I could do about it. I am a total delight on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 😛 I have to cut way back on my activities.

1ke, first of all, do not make a mistake, I do obey The Church. If I would not do so, I could not say that I live in full communion with The RCC.

I find your post very offending. Christians are supposed to be kind to each other, yes?

I do know what The RCC teach, and I had my fair shares of bullies in school so I do need them on a Christian web-site.

I have no reason to not obey The RCC, if I would, I would not be on a Catholic forum.

I am a “grown up” man, and I do need someone to tell me what to do or not, in a matter like this.

I will no longer answer nor comment this thread, If I want to be offended and ridiculed and told what to do, I am sure I find a place for that. I did choose this forum because I was told that it is the best and largest, and that they welcome new members with Christian manners and love.

As it happen, I was wrong. Such rule really exist. I was not aware of it and in the translation of the CCC in my native language it is very unclear to grasp. But the main thing is, I was wrong.

But that does not give anyone a right to be rude, offending and treat one with a certain amount of “fatherly” manner.

Now that I know that the rule and in use, I will obey The RCC.

PS: I apologize to all who did participate in this sorry thread.

Okay :). But, I don’t think it is an issue. I don’t think the Church will return to the longer fast anymore than she will go back to no Saturday vigil Mass, so I think you are fine. 🙂

I go to the 12 noon mass. I eat my breakfast at about 7 am, and then that’s it for me until 2 pm when I get back home. But I think it would be harder to go to an early mass and not have breakfast until after mass. I really like breakfast and a cup of coffee when I get up. So it really does depend on what you are used to.

For me… It’s bad.
Is that before or after the caffeine? 😃

Seriously, OP, if it’s that hard to stay awake, then take a caffeine tablet with a glass of water. That makes it medication.

OK I just found out that canon law (919.1) states that water and medicine are the sole exceptions to the one-hour fast. I know this is lame, but the morning daily mass can be tough to get through without an “eye-opener” as an addict of a different kind might call it. And yes, I know that a better guy would get up earlier for coffee or break the habit.

So a) is coffee right out and b) how bad would it be to keep drinking it? Is drinking black coffee (0 calories) as bad as, say, eating a donut? Would it constitute unworthy reception of Holy Eucharist, forfeiting grace otherwise received? Can I get away with calling it medicinal? Do priests who have to say early masses ever struggle with this?
As long as you have your coffee prior to one hour of receiving Holy Eucharist you are good to go.

Lasting faith, your humility is admirable. God bless.
Thank you for those kind words. I would like to quote a sentence I once saw, “to be wrong is a blessing, it make you humble”.

Just remember: The fast used to be from Midnight saturday night. Rome reduced it; His Holiness Pius XII reduced it to several hours in 1953, and to 1 hour in 1957, at least according to the Baltimore Catechism, Q.370.

In some of the Churches of the Eastern Rites that are in Union with Rome, the fast is from Vespers the night before - possibly as early as 6PM - and liturgy runs 3+ hours in some cases.

So the 1 hour fast before is not so harsh.

I don’t understand what you mean by “how bad”, God told you not to do it, so don’t do it!
