How big of a role does free will actually play?

I hope this question makes sense:

If a person prays for another person to do something specific (i.e. return to the Church), will God intervene or does he allow the person’s free will to determine the outcome?
 
We have no way of knowing exactly what God will do when we pray but any interaction by him will not result in the loss of anyone’s free will. For example, God may provide additional graces to help someone move closer to him (e.g. to entice them back to the Church) but the person will still exercise his own free will in choosing how to respond to those graces.
