Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz refers to his ecclesiastical jurisdiction as “our little diocese on the plains.” But its appearance — to some — as a remote, largely rural backwater is deceptive.

He makes it look easy, doesn’t he?
  • Virtually no lawsuits / coverups
  • Booming priestly and religious vocations
  • Capacity shortages in seminaries
  • Opening catholic schools instead of closing them
  • Clarity in teaching
  • Beautiful and fiathful liturgies
I can almost hear the “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

If all our bishops were like Bishop Bruskewitz, we would convert the country and the world!

It also helps that Bishop Bruskewitz didn’t have a mess to clean up when he got there. The previous bishop had been there since the late 60’s, and was very orthodox. He spared Lincoln from at least some of the craziness of those days. Bishop Bruskewitz is wonderful- it takes tremendous courage and strength to stay the course as he has done (particularly during times when few others seem to do so). I don’t think he would deny, however, that orthodoxy and reverence are much easier to maintain when they were never lost.

I very much hope they get another steadfast bishop.
I imagine they will. The Faith in Lincoln is strong, but so is the opposition. The Pope is well aware of that. I’m also sure he knows how crucial it is to not allow the Faith there to slip away after it’s been such a wonderful model for how Catholic dioceses ought to be.

I love this man. I still remember the time several years ago when I had to speak up and defend him in front of our entire RCIA class (I was a sponsor) when our associate pastor called him the “nut in Nebraska”. I wish he was 30 years younger…let’s pray God keeps him healthy for many years to come.

makes me think of Luke 1:37 " … for nothing shall be impossible with G_d." 😃
