How can a Pope be infallible if he is a scoundrel ?

Some Popes in history have acted less than holy. In light of an article my wife read about who elects the pope and the fact that some elections may not have been inspired by the holy spirit, but God used the situation for his good (by Jimmy Akin) we have been discussing the infallibility of those popes. How can a pope be infallible when his character is morally bankrupt? If the church has been protected from the formal infallible teaching from a pope that should not have been elected what about the “collateral damage” from the actions of popes like these that continually damage the church because of there non- “ex cathedra” teachings?
