I love this part of the prayer! Sometimes I find a bit of worry creeping in when confronted by signs of scrupulosity – the examinations of conscience that make it seem that every single thing we think or do is a mortal sin, or the line of thought that practically everyone will go to Hell (if the most devout among us, who strive to be like Jesus every moment of their lives, are worried about going to Hell, what hope is there for the rest of us? ).Do you remember the prayer at Mass that comes after the Our Father? “Save us from all anxiety, as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.”
But then, I think of this, and the worry ceases. Worry is stifling; it leads to paralysis, not action. I will do what I can to help those around me, and to help myself lead the most Christlike life I’m capable of, and ultimately, leave the rest in God’s hands.Sufficient are the worries that are today’s task. Leave the rest to God… and “wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.”
(And I agree with what wcknight said about Purgatory!)
