Like ourselves, I feel that sometimes priests also need encouragement and inspiration to carry on their duties. Besides prayers, how can families help to provide this? By sharing personal faith stories?
If you hear a homily you particularly like let him know specifically what you liked about it; it increased your knowledge of the readings, was inspirational, etc.
Also, ask him over for dinner to enjoy some relaxed time and let him know you are happy
he is a priest.
How about a card or small gift at Christmas or Easter or anytime for instance. My parents always remember their priest at Christmas and Easter along with a food item they know he enjoys once in a while. That’s where I got my habits!
I agree that it helps to show up when he needs help and to let him know that you’re grateful for what he does on a specific and regular basis, rather than approaching him only when you have a problem. If you get along well, inviting him for dinner or some social outing you think he’ll enjoy is nice, too, but that isn’t something he has the capacity to do with everyone in the parish!
Invite him over for dinner! Most priests come from large families, miss Mom’s home cooking and would love the opportunity to spend an evening with Mom, Dad and the kids.
