I am a college student and the other guys in my dorm like to debate me on my religion. Though most of the people aren’t Catholics one of them is and he posed this question which I could not answer.
He asked me why the Church agrees with the death penalty when it also opposes abortion. He told me he completely understood and agreed with the Church’s stance on abortion, but he said he doesn’t understand how killing a person can be okay in one situation (death penalty) and not okay in another (abortion); he believes it isn’t okay either way.
I explained the teaching in the Catechism of the Catholic Church but he didn’t buy a “circumstance where it is necessary to protect lives.” He wanted a specific example of a situation and I couldn’t give him one.
I came on this site and searched for post pertaining to this and found the article War and Capital Punishment I read it but still can’t put together a good explanation for my friend. I told him I’d find him an explanation so I was wondering if you could help.
Thanks for your time and God bless.
