How can I explain the Catholic view on capital punishment with scripture?

recently a fundamentalist friend raised the point on why we should believe in the death sentence because scripture directs us to believe in it. I told her that I don’t know the scriptural basis of our church in this area but that I trust my church to teach God’s truth and gave my personal beliefs about why it’s wrong. What are the primary scripture passages that support our church in this area?
