How can I explain to a protestant friend why we believe Mary was sinless?

Ask your Protestant friend which of the early reformers taught that Mary was a sinner. The answer is NONE OF THEM.

Ask your Protestant friend where Jesus got his humanity from. There is only one answer. Mary.

How can Jesus get his sinless humanity from a sinful mother? It is not logical. The only way out of this is to commit serious Christological heresies. Protestants like to pick apart Catholic Marian doctrines outside of her relationship with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Don’t fall into this trap.

Have you heard the old one about Jesus and the adulterous woman? Jesus says “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” and a rock is tossed into the square. He looks up and says “Mom, stop that!”

Seriously, I got stuck on that coming into the Church. I kept thinking, how come she deserve to be sinless, why was she so special. The answer is she didn’t deserve it. No one does. But God chose her. He knew she would preserve her sinlessness. And He probably protected her to some extent in life as well. Just as any son would protect his mom.

Mary was sinless beause she was the mother of the Son of God - who is entirely without sin.

God = utterly sinless. Jesus=God

Mary bore Jesus and gave Him His humanity. His human body and human nature came from Mary

Could Jesus have taken sinful flesh and a sinful nature from Mary? That is impossible, since there cannot be any sinful part of Him. God demands perfect holiness. To bear the Son of God, Mary must be sinless.

You may already know that there is a thread currently running on this subject with about 225 posts.
You can get a lot of material there that may help.
Some simple points.
  1. Mary reconciled womanhood to Eve who was also born sinless but fell. Mary is the Second Eve in Gen 3:15, also born sinless but did not fall, as her Son reconciled us to Adam, born sinless, but fell also.
Mary is the Ark of the (New) Covenant in Rev 11:19-12:1. Just as designed especially by God, so is Mary especially designed (prepared). The Ark carried the 3 symbols of Christ, and so did Mary in the Real Person. The Old Ark was the most Sacred Icon in the OT. Mary is the most Sacred Icon of the NT, both being the carrier of the Messiah…OT symbolically, NT fulfillment.
The Humanity of Jesus could not have come from a sinner’s blood, lest He be tainted.
Quite amazing, really.
Finally, If Mary was a sinner, then she was DIRECTLY responsible in the torture and Crucifxion of Her own Son, in the same sense as you and I. Of course most Protestants believe she did just that.
Pretty sad, really.
