How can I get an indult Mass in our city?

Greetings,

What can I do to get an indult Pius V Mass in our city? To give some background, we have three diocese: two Latin rite (one french, one english) and one Byzantine rite. I live in the french diocese (though I’m Italian ). There have been people here that have tried asking our bishops in the past but with no success. I’m aware that our holy father may release a moto proprio releasing the pre-conciliar liturgy, and so it may not be necessary to do anything, but whatever happens I’d still like to do something to get the ball rolling. Any thoughts?

I’m not sure I can really help, but I am confused and dubious about the situation as you describe it. Namely: I have *never heard *of 2 current diocese of the same rite with overlapping territory!? Are you sure there is both an English and a French Latin Rite diocese!?

Looking at catholic-hierarchy.org/diocese/qview1.html#ca I see only the Latin Rite Archdiocese and the Byzantine (Ukranian) Archeparchy. I suppose one (or both) of the Maronite and/or Melkite Eparchys out of Montreal may have jurisdiction over the territory as well?

(I would also presume that you reside in both the Latin and Byzantine simultaneously, since they necessarily overlap, and maybe the others as well, but ordinarily a layman belongs to only a single rite (I know I live in both (at least) a Latin Diocese and Byzantine Archdiocese))

In any case, I think the only recourse you have would deal with the Latin Rite Archdiocese, since that is the rite of the liturgy in question.

West of the Red River was the english speaking community, and east of the Red River was the french speaking community (each with they’re own diocese). In the last 60 or so years both regions joined but each section still retained they’re diocese (probably due to language differences). The english speaking diocese is the diocese of Winnipeg, and the french speaking diocese is the diocese of St. Boniface. Both diocese are Latin rite.

I don’t have an answer for you, but if you figure it out, PLEASE share! Our bishop absolutely refuses to allow an indult mass in our diocese.

Short of finding a priest to celebrate it and having him beg the Bishop for an indult? Nothing really.

Get 10000 people to write in for that priest and the Bishop may change his mind if he didn’t want to hand out an indult.

And then pray for the universal indult.

While i cannot give you precise information, you might try contacting an area that has the indult and ask them for advice on how to proceed. I am enclosing a link to the society here in san Diego. We’ve had the indult here for many years under several Bishops. Maybe someone there can point you in the right directionsandiego-tlmc.org/

Ultimately though it will depend on your Arch Bishop. I have heard that he is supportive of the indult, at least prior to coming to Winnipeg. If you can demonstrate a desire and a need for the indult it looks as if you may have a better than average chance given his track record.

Write your bishop a nice, very polite letter. Then pray and do pennance for twenty years and you MIGHT get an indult Mass.

Contact the Ecclesia Dei commission in Rome. They are supposed to work with bishops to get the Traditional Mass in dioceses.

Show your Bishop that there are at least 50 people who would attend regularly, actively volunteer when appropriately called upon, and support it financially.

You are looking at wages, food, housing and housekeeping for the priest, as well as furnishings, vestements, and incidentals for the Mass itself, including a Latin Sacramentary, Latin missals, Latin Book of the Gospels, Latin Lectionary, prayer books, altar railings, etc.

If the TLM can’t support itself, then the Bishop will think twice about it, but if you can get enough interest, enough volunteers (flower ladies, altar servers, etc., etc., etc.) and enough money to take care of it, then he would probably be willing to consider it.
